Retired Super League halfback linked with stunning NRL move

According to the Daily Telegraph, NRL club Parramatta Eels have considered a shock move for former Super League star Mitchell Pearce.

Pearce was one of the best players in the NRL. The halfback starred for New South Wales in a huge State of Origin success only years before he left Newcastle Knights for Super League.

He also won the NRL with Sydney Roosters in 2013 and looked to repeat the feat in Super League with the Catalans Dragons. Like his former NRL teammate James Maloney, he was able to guide the Catalans Dragons to the Super League Grand Final but was unable to win the game against Wigan Warriors.

This was his last game before he retired. However, the injury to Mitchell Moses has prompted Parramatta Eels to consider  move for the retired halfback according to the Daily Telegraph.

That being said, the Eels have elected to trust what they have rather than bring in the former Super League star.

The debate raged on about Pearce on Triple M Radio Station, “Why wouldn’t they (discuss Pearce),” former Test forward Gorden Tallis told Triple M.

“Mitchell (Pearce) played hard and as a number seven he was a big body,” Tallis said.

“He was a great runner of the football and never shirked his job.”

Meanwhile, former NRL star for Canterbury Bulldogs and St George Illawarra Dragons as well as a St Helens legend in Super League, prop James Graham told Triple M: “For Mitch, he’d be mad to come back and play.

“Imagine him coming back and the media scrutiny, the pressure. It would be a huge story.

“Could he cope with it? Absolutely, yes. But does he want to put himself and his family through that again? I’d be amazed if he came back.”

Pearce has been replaced at Catalans by Theo Fages and Jordan Abdull. Only one of them featured against Warrington Wolves however. Fages was injured before the game with a strained calf.

Abdull produced a masterclass against the Wolves scoring the clinching try for the Dragons as they claimed a win that moved them level on points with St Helens at the top of the league.
