Sky Sports pundit believes Lachlan Lam could follow Adrian Lam to Hull FC

Adrian Lam has emerged as a shock contender for the vacant Hull FC head coach job and now Jon Wilkin has made the extraordinary claim that the Black and Whites could manage to swoop for son Lachlan too.

The notion of Lam to Hull FC was not in anybody’s mind at midday yesterday but once it was confirmed that FC had managed to land the massive coup of John Asiata, signing the Leigh skipper on a three-year deal from 2025, then speculation started.

One of those to speculate was Sky Sports presenter Jenna Brooks and her suggestion was then compounded by Brian Carney’s report that “contact” had been made between Hull FC and the Leigh head coach.

Carney explained: “Paul Rowley was rumoured to be offered a very lucrative contract at Hull FC, which I’m sure in the small world of rugby league will have pricked the ears and caught the attention of other Super League coaches.

“Jenna is absolutely right to suggest that Adrian Lam may be at Hull FC next year. I believe an approach has been made.”

Responding to that point, Jon Wilkin then made a bold claim live on Sky Sports’ coverage of Warrington Wolves vs Hull FC.

“Could easily follow his Dad” – Adrian Lam to take Lachlan to Hull FC?

Much of Jenna Brooks’ initial suggestion that Adrian Lam could head to Hull FC was based around the Black and Whites signing John Asiata, Leigh’s star player, leading Brian Carney to compare the situation to Hull FC’s approach for Paul Rowley.

Carney explained that Hull FC tried to swoop for a player and coach double when they attempted to raid Salford, revealing: “Richie Myler thought he had landed Paul Rowley and some Salford players. News broke today that one of those Salford players was Marc Sneyd.”

To that point, Jon Wilkin argued: “If we were talking about Paul Rowley taking Mark Sneyd with him then when John Asiata signs for Hull in these situations you’d imagine that Adrian Lam could well be not far behind.

“Then, what you ask is about Lachlan Lam, who could easily follow his dad.”

That suggestion was initially shot down by Carney, who explained that Lachlan Lam remains under contract, but Wilkin was having none of it.

Reacting to the notion that Lachlan Lam may have NRL-exit clauses in his contract, Wilkin proposed: “Well he might have a ‘Follow your Dad’ clause, you never know. Salford were going to get their pockets picked, could Leigh get their pockets picked? Whatever is happening, Hull FC are making moves.”

Super League coaching roundabout in full flow

It has been just over three weeks since Hull FC sacked Tony Smith but the landscape of Super League and the security of all the head coach jobs has changed enormously.

Paul Rowley’s status at Salford now seems more solid than ever whilst all of a sudden Adrian Lam’s tenure at Leigh looks to be a concern.

The coaching roundabout has well and truly begun and that’s all stemmed from just one dismissal.

“This is the interesting thing about the coaching world,” Jon Wilkin argued on that vein of thinking.

“There was 12 coaches in positions, Tony Smith goes, and look what happens. It’s chaos. It’s chaos. That just one job.

“We’ve seen it in the NRL, we’ve seen it in Super League. One job becomes available, it makes it chaos.”
