“Lots of respect” – Castleford Tigers assistant Danny McGuire addresses Hull FC rumours

Danny McGuire linked with Hull FC job

Danny McGuire has aspirations to coach in Super League. After he ended his playing career in Super League, he moved into a coaching position as Willie Peters’ assistant at Hull KR. Now Craig Lingard’s assistant at Castleford Tigers, McGuire has been linked with the vacant position at Hull FC in recent weeks.

McGuire ended a distinguished playing career at Hull KR, after a long association with the Leeds Rhinos. While at the Rhinos, McGuire won eight Super League titles, two League Leaders’ Shields, two Challenge Cups and three World Club Challenge titles. He took on a role in the Robins coaching staff under Tony Smith, and enjoyed a spell as interim head coach, before moving to the Tigers.

Now, speaking on Sky Sports, McGuire has addressed reports linking him to the Hull job. FC have been without a coach since Tony Smith left the Black and White in April, and have not won a game since his departure.

Speaking in the build up to the Warrington vs Hull KR game, McGuire was asked whether he still had a desire to be a head coach in Super League, and whether the FC job would be of interest to him. McGuire was quick to distance him self from the reports.

“Still lots of desire, not quite ready for it yet. Lots of respect for Hull FC as a club, no dialogue and you know once you’ve spent time in Hull.”

McGuire also stated that, despite having left the club, his allegiance remains with the Robins.

“In Rugby League you’re either one or the other and I’m red and white unfortunately.”

Search continues for Richie Myler

Hull remain without a permanent head coach, having parted company with Smith after a disastrous start to the season. FC have managed just one win this season, and face a crucial clash with London Broncos this weekend.

Earlier in the week, Hull Director of Rugby, Richie Myler, confirmed that current interim coach, Simon Grix, is in pole position for role. However, the club are open to both an immediate appointment, and one made for the beginning of the 2025 season.

Numerous high-profile coaches have been linked with the job. First, current Salford Red Devils coach, Paul Rowley, appeared set to take the job before turning it down. Then Hull FC were linked with NRL assistant coaches Lee Briers and Brian McDermott, but neither have emerged as serious contenders. Most recently, Hull have been linked with Leigh Leopards head coach, Adrian Lam. Lam is out of contract at the end of the season and refused to be drawn on the links in his press conference earlier in the week.
