Warrington Wolves come up short for the second time this season against Catalans Dragons.
The Wolves twice battled from behind but it wasn’t enough as the Catalans Dragons joined St Helens at the Super League summit ahead of their meeting next week.
Warrington found themselves 18-0 down after a fast start from the French side. They then battled back to 18-12 but in the second half they fell 28-12 behind again.
Tries from James Harrison and George Williams made it 28-24 and they had chances to win the game before Jordan Abdull sealed a 32-24 win.
Warrington Wolves boss has his say on defeat
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Warrington Wolves Head Coach Sam Burgess explained why his side came up short against Steve McNamara’s men.
He said: “I guess I’d say we were done by a slow start. Yeah, probably something we need to look at. We start slow, both halves really. We’ve worked hard now in defence over the off-season and I just really didn’t see that tonight. So, a bit of work to do.”
Asked about their two comebacks: “Yeah, well nearly is not good enough in this game, so you know, we’ve got a bit to work on. We can take some things out of it, no doubt about that, but we just missed the jump physically and defensively we just didn’t get our job done, so a bit of work to do, but some positives to take away.”
The Wolves now have two big games coming in the next two weeks. The Wolves take on Leeds Rhinos who are now level on points with the Wolves.
The Wire then tale on St Helens in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals so it could be a pivotal fortnight for Sam Burgess’ side.
Burgess is excited to test how far his side has come after this defeat to Catalans Dragons.
He said of the fixtures on the horizon: “Yeah well we’ve got to fix a few things up before then otherwise especially against you know the bigger teams we’ve got to put some more value into our defence but we’ve got a great run, a great test for our culture and see where we have come as a club.”
