Three Super League sides who should sign Greg Eden amidst exit talks

Greg Eden Super League

Former Super League utility back Greg Eden has been the subject of rumours that he could be set to exit his current club Halifax Panthers, but which Super League sides should be tapping up the 33-year-old?

Greg Eden ended his long stay with Castleford Tigers last year, swapping The Jungle for The Shay, however, he could already be on his way out according to recent reports.

The Game Caller has reported that Eden has asked for a release from the Championship club, with that request being granted. So far in the 2024 campaign Eden has made nine appearances with just four of those coming in the league.

He has played the last two games for the Panthers, scoring a try in each of the defeats against both Swinton and Featherstone, highlighting that he still possesses the try-scoring knack that saw him clock up 112 in 122 while playing for Castleford Tigers.

Several sides were reported to be interested in Eden last year and with lots of teams facing injury issues in their back-line, plus a host of other sides looking for depth and competition, which Super League sides should be making a play for Greg Eden?

Leeds Rhinos

Perhaps the most obvious choice would be the Headingley club with injuries having decimated their season so far. Their backs have been hit hardest too with four players currently absent from their backline.

That includes star signing Paul Momirovski and fellow centre Harry Newman whilst wingers David Fusitu’a and Riley Lumb are also absent at present. Eden would slot in easily alongside Ash Handley in the wing position, which would in turn allow Luis Roberts to revert to the centres.

Of course, Eden would also offer depth should full-back Lachlan Miller suffer an injury but he’d be more likely to secure a starting role on the wing given the club’s current injury issues there, and previous issues for Ash Handley.

Hull FC

Whilst Leeds Rhinos specifically need help in the backs due to injuries, Hull FC are a side that just needs help. The Black and Whites have won just once all season and will hope to double that tally when they face London Broncos on Sunday.

There’s been a lack of quality among the squad but they have also been hampered by injuries and other exits such as full-back Tex Hoy who was released and has since shone at Castleford Tigers. Jack Walker has impressed at full-back but has a poor injury record meaning Eden would offer plenty of security there.

He would also have a strong chance at starting on the wing given that the first-choice wingers that Hull FC started the season with, Liam Tindall and Darnell McIntosh, have both exited with Tindall at Bradford on loan and McIntosh departing in a swap deal.

That swap deal did see Tom Briscoe return and Lewis Martin has been performing well on the opposite wing but Eden’s class and experience makes him an obvious candidate for Hull FC to sign.

Leigh Leopards

The third team on this shortlist would be Leigh Leopards and in this instance, the move could see Greg Eden return to full-back. With Gareth O’Brien injured currently, star recruit Matt Moylan has been forced into the full-back role.

Moylan has performed brilliantly in the role but that swap has left Lachlan Lam partnered with Ben McNamara or hooker Brad Dwyer at times. Bringing Eden in would anchor the backline and allow Moylan to return to the halves.
