Wigan Warriors: Super League champions rename DW Stadium

Wigan Warriors

Wigan Warriors are one of Super League’s most successful sides and as such their stadium has become an iconic ground within the competition, however, it’s heading for a name change.

The Cherry and Whites are one of a number of Super League sides that share their ground with the local football team, other examples including but not being limited to Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants.

In those instances, the Super League sides at times struggle to fill their grounds with the football sides boasting more success. As for Wigan Warriors, they’re the pride of the town and as such they’ve made the DW Stadium synonymous with their brand.

That’s set to change though in the coming days.

It has been confirmed by Wigan Warriors that the DW Stadium will be renamed to the Brick Community Stadium, as of Monday 13th May.

With Matt Peet’s side playing on the road against Huddersfield Giants on Saturday, it means that Wigan have played their last game at the DW Stadium before it will be rebranded. That game saw them beat Catalans Dragons in a re-run of last year’s Grand Final.

They won’t have a chance to make a winning start at the Brick Community Stadium until the 21st of June with the Warriors on the road for their next four Super League games.

Wigan Warriors confirmed the name change earlier this week with a statement released via their website.

It read: “Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic are delighted to announce that the DW Stadium will officially become the Brick Community Stadium from Monday 13 May 2024.

“The renaming of the stadium is in partnership with local charity, The Brick, whose work began over 100 years ago to improve the lives of those in the town most in need.

“The Brick delivers effective solutions to address poverty and homelessness across the Wigan and Leigh Borough, providing supported and emergency accommodation services, street outreach services, wrap-around person-led support, a food community and affordable furniture and essential household items to make a house a home.

“The name will initially remain in place until the end of 2025 with further support for local charities to be announced in the coming weeks. Both clubs will also continue to work together to secure a long-term commercial stadium partner for 2026 and beyond.”

The Brick are a longstanding charity in Wigan and Wigan Warriors have already collaborated with them this season with the club’s third shirt being a tribute and collab with the charity.

That charity third shirt brandishes the charity’s message and colours with just a limited run of 1,500 being made available to purchase and £5 of each purchase going straight to the charity.

That link-up was confirmed back in January and this new renaming extends the work that the Warriors are doing in the community. The renaming has been explained as a way to recognise “that it is the people of the town who are at the heart of the community and who are the driving force of both clubs”.

Chief Executive Kris Radlinski commented: “The Brick charity has been a cornerstone of Wigan, transforming and influencing countless lives over many years. Naming the stadium in Wigan after their charity is a suitable tribute to their significant impact on the community.

“The renaming marks the beginning of our collaboration on meaningful projects aimed at providing every opportunity for success to the people of our town. The Brick Community Stadium in Wigan truly embodies this spirit — it’s a venue where everyone in the town can come together to support their chosen team.”

Whilst Wigan Warriors won’t play at the newly renamed Brick Community Stadium for over a month, details of their upcoming games and all other rugby league games on TV can be found here.
