Leigh Leopards marquee signing Matt Moylan wanted by multiple clubs

The Leigh Leopards have suffered a bumpy start to the season, winning just two games from their opening nine in Super League. The club is currently undergoing a period of transition. A number of their biggest names out of contract at the end of the season.

There is currently something of an exodus from Leigh, with most of the departures heading to Hull FC. In recent weeks, Tom Briscoe, John Asiata and Oliver Holmes have all had moves to the Black and Whites confirmed.

Reports today suggest Zak Hardaker will join them for the 2025 season. Leigh head coach Adrian Lam has also been linked with a move to the MKM Stadium when his contract expires.

However, one Leigh man is bucking the trend, and has high sights on a different path if reports are to be believed. His departure would be a huge blow to the Leopards.

According to reports in the Daily Telegraph, Matt Moylan is keen to secure a return to the NRL. Moylan only joined the Leopards on a two-year contract at the start of the 2024 season. However, it appears he is keen to return to Australia.

Moylan played 191 games for the Penrith Panthers and the Cronulla before joining the Leopards for 2024. According to the Daily Telegraph, NRL clubs have been alerted to his potential interest in a return. However, as yet, none have committed to a move for Moylan.

Moylan, who plays primarily at stand-off, has also covered the full-back spot for Leigh this season. He has played in all nine of Leigh’s Super League fixtures so far, scoring three tries.

Moylan’s exit would represent a huge blow to a Leopards side which already looks set to lose some of its biggest names. Asiata’s exit shook the club, with Hull FC seemingly offering terms which Leigh were unable to match.

Leigh owner, Derek Beaumont, has recently reaffirmed to spending the salary cap and using all the marquee spots available to the club. However, with Moylan under contract, the Leopards will not have planned on having to replace the Australian star.

Half-backs of Moylan’s quality and experience are a precious commodity. If he is available, there is likely to be NRL interest in securing his services.

It will be a test of Beaumont’s resolve if a bid is tabled. Given the Leigh man is under contract, they would not have to release Moylan.

However, if the player wants to return to Australia, it may be the best decision for all parties to allow him to leave.
