Barrie McDermott explains why he’s “not convinced by Wigan”

Wigan Warriors were the team many people felt could dethrone St Helens at the start of the season.

The Challenge Cup holders and the side who finished second last year, they started the season in indifferent form but around Easter looked like the team to beat as they ascended to the Super League summit but questions have been raised over the last few weeks.

So much so, Barrie McDermott said that they were in an “interesting place.”

“They’re in a really interesting place. Matt Peet spoke about re-discovering who they are, that Wigan way, that strong defence, powerful through the middle, but craft and initiative as well,” he said on Sky Sports.

“A lot of that goes through Harry Smith, a lot of the kicking goes through Harry Smith.

“There’s no better player in terms of kicking out of hand.”

He went on to say that he was “not convinced” by the Warriors as we hit the halfway marker in the season:

“I’m not convinced about Wigan. I am not convinced about what they can do.

“I know they have won their last couple of games.

“Hull KR when they are at their absolute best are probably a better side than Wigan.”

They did indeed beat the Robins in golden point extra time on Thursday night.
