Richie Myler has landed his first big signing as Director of Rugby at Hull FC with Leigh Leopards’ Challenge Cup-winning captain John Asiata set to join the Black and Whites in 2025.

It’s a major coup for Hull FC with Asiata one of the highest-profile players off contract in Super League. A signing of such a level shows the intent of FC as they enter this new era that will be presided over by Richie Myler.

Equally, it’s a massive loss for Leigh Leopards with John Asiata serving as one of the club’s most influential players during the 2023 campaign that saw them shock Super League by not only evading relegation but placing fifth, as well as that famous Challenge Cup win.

Hull FC confirmed the news of Asiata signing via social media and with a statement posted on their website that read: “Hull FC are delighted to announce the signing of John Asiata from Leigh Leopards for the 2025 Betfred Super League season.

“One of the club’s most exciting signings in recent years, the powerhouse forward will join up with the Black & Whites on a three-year deal.”

To land Asiata is a massive deal and no doubt that will have been aided by the security of a three-year contract as well as what is reported to be huge wages.

Rugby League Live editor Matt Shaw took to social media to report wages of around £220,000 are what Hull FC have shelled out to land the loose forward, however, Asiata has revealed the actual motivations behind the move.

He said: “I’m really excited for the new challenge that lies ahead for me at Hull FC.

“After speaking to Richie Myler, it’s clear that we are both on the same page in wanting to help this club to being better than ever before.”

Not only does the signing mark the first major one under Richie Myler, it also marks the first arrival since the departure of long-serving CEO James Clark whom it was announced yesterday had left Hull FC after 15 years.

Despite that, he seems to have left behind a crack team led by Myler with Asiata lauding the praised on him and chairman Adam Pearson.

“Thank you to Adam, Richie and the Hull FC family for having faith in me. I really look forward to getting stuck in with the boys once the time comes.

“I also want to acknowledge and thank God for opening this door for me and my family.”

There were questions over Richie Myler’s credentials for the job as Director of Rugby with his appointment coming from out of the blue but he’s shown plenty of promise early doors.

In spite of being knocked back by Paul Rowley to take over as head coach, Hull FC have landed the signature of Tom Briscoe, loan deals for Yusuf Aydin and Ed Chamberlain and now the major signing of Asiata.

Myler has spoken on the deal, explaining: “Everyone at Hull FC is absolutely delighted to bring a player of John’s calibre to the club.

“John is a highly respected individual, who is a true leader on and off the field.

“A signing of this quality clearly shows the direction in which the club is heading.

“We are delighted to have John as part of our journey over the next three years and he will really help define our identity as a club moving forwards.”

Hull FC travel to Warrington Wolves tonight searching for a second Super League win with that game televised on Sky Sports, whilst details of the other Super League games on TV can be found here.
