Watch: Hilarious moment as Paul Wellens gets confused by golden point

St Helens head coach Paul Wellens

St Helens’ win over Leeds Rhinos was one of the games of the season and produced one of the funniest moments as well.

After Lewis Dodd nailed the winning drop goal in extra time, coach Paul Wellens celebrated before shouting for the Saints to watch the short kick off not realising it was golden point and not extra time.

CEO Mike Rush had to explain.

It was a fast start from the Rhinos. Leeds went the length of the pitch. Quick hands inside their own 20 metres, Ash Handley released second-row Rhyse Martin. He cut inside of Konrad Hurrell and Jonny Lomax to tear completely away. He had Richie Myler on his inside and Ash Handley on his outside and he made the right choice in passing the ball to Handley to score a delightful try.

Then, after a lovely Nene MacDonald break, Leeds looked set to question Saints again but a knock on from Tom Holroyd gave Saints the field position they needed to test the Rhinos and they did pushing wide with a delightful set play with Tommy Makinson finishing in the corner.

Leeds added to their lead when a huge kick from Richie Myler and a brilliant chase from Sam Walters coupled with Tommy Makinson coming across to protect his fullback saw a collision and meant Jack Welsby couldn’t take the ball cleanly and Cameron Smith was on hand to score.

After losing Aidan Sezer early, it was a really makeshift Leeds team when both Harry Newman and Morgan Gannon were helped from the field with leg injuries within minutes of each other.

Things got worse for Leeds in terms of luck. It was a very tough call against Sam Walters when his try was disallowed and a knock on was given against the big prop as he looked to stretch over and score.

Saints started the second half like they meant business and soon were right back in the game when a lovely ball allowed Curtis Sironen to crash through on a brilliant line.

Makinson then nailed a penalty to make it 12-all and, despite some mad moments at the end, the game went to golden point where Dodd won it.
