Feud brewing over former Leeds Rhinos coaching target as NRL club looks to future

Manly recently parted company with coach Des Hassler as they looked to bring Anthony Seibold as their new Head Coach, a man who once registered his interest in the Leeds Rhinos job, supported by another former Leeds coaching target Shane Flanagan who won the Premiership with Cronulla back in 2016.

The Sea Eagles are hoping to bring him in as an assistant but the offer has led to something of a feud.

Right now, Flanagan’s management knows he is secure in a good job at St George Illawarra Dragons as roster management consultant and they have questioned if Manly’s offer would command the same sort of salary that he incurs now as the Dragons whilst working for Fox Sports alongside him.

They are recommending that he rejects Manly’s offer especially due to the commute and the fact it is thought that being an assistant for three years could hurt his chances of returning to a Head Coaching role himself.

However, things have culminated in a feud with the Daily Telegraph reporting that Seibold bypassed Flanagan’s management to speak directly to the former Sharks boss in a move that has unsurprisingly sparked anger amongst them.

However, no offer has yet been made to the former Rhinos target whilst Seibold, still based in the UK working alongside Eddie Jones in the England Rugby Union set up, desperately tries to tie down his coaching staff.

Another stumbling block is the reported clause in his contract at St George that doesn’t allow him to leave unless for a Head Coach role meaning he wouldn’t be afforded an easy release for an assistant job.
