Huddersfield Giants: Adam Swift injury update with Super League Player of the Month sidelined

Huddersfield Giants

Adam Swift has had an electric start to his career at Huddersfield Giants with the winger leading Super League try-scoring charts, however, he won’t face Wigan Warriors this weekend.

It’s a major blow for the Giants who are behind in the race for the playoffs, currently sitting in eighth place and four points back from tomorrow’s opponent Wigan Warriors who sit in second.

That highlights the close nature of Super League this season with signings such as Swift being pivotal to the success of Huddersfield Giants so far.

The flying winger has scored eleven tries in Super League with at least one in each of his last nine games in the competition. He has also registered two try assists during that period as well as clocking over 220 yards last week against Salford Red Devils.

Huddersfield Giants will have to fare without him tomorrow when they face champions Wigan though with Ian Watson providing an injury update after the speedster was not named in the 21-man squad.

Swift’s absence will mean that Sam Halsall or Jake Bibby could get a chance on the wing opposite Elliot Wallis who wasn’t punished further after his controversial red card against the Red Devils last week.

Watson spoke to the press earlier and told BBC Radio Leeds that Swift’s absence is more precautionary than anything else.

He explained: “He just got a little niggle so we’re just looking after him a bit. Hopefully, it’s nothing major, he had a scan the other day and there’s just something small in there so we just need to be careful with him as we go forward and hopefully he comes through for next week.

“It’s not a concern at the moment for next week given what the physios are saying. He should be fine, he’s just got to make sure he keeps ticking off the boxes.”

Speaking on the steps that the Huddersfield Giants’ physios and medical team had taken to ensure that Swift has as strong a chance as possible to play in next week’s Challenge Cup semi-final, Watson revealed: “We’ve taken him off his feet over the last couple of days because he ran the other day and could feel it, so we’ve taken him off his feet so hopefully that puts him in a better position for next week.”

On how the injury happened, Watson explained that Swift had actually played the second-half of the defeat to Salford whilst nursing the injury.

The Giants boss said: “He felt it in the first half inside his groin. He felt a little tweak in there and he got through the game fine but it stiffened up once he stopped playing.

“In the next few days over recovery, he still felt a little bit tight so it’s just more precautionary than anything else.”
