“Absolute disgrace” – Wigan Warriors fans seething after defeat

Wigan Warriors

Wigan Warriors were handed a rugby league lesson at times in their loss to Hull KR with the Robins beating Matt Peet’s side to the punch in almost all aspects in their 26-10 victory.

Willie Peters had called on his team to respond following their own poor performance against Catalans Dragons and his side duly obliged him.

Rovers were quick out the doors and led 10-0 after 12 minutes with Jesse Sue bouncing off and running over the top of Liam Farrell before ex-Wigan man Oliver Gildart scored in the corner.

Peta Hiku worsened matters for Wigan as he broke from his own half before combining with Niall Evalds to make it 18-0 on the half-hour mark.

Wigan did get one back through Abbas Miski but Ryan Hall’s 245th Super League try and Kelepia Tanginoa’s lung-busting effort after Wigan simply stopped playing sealed the game.

Liam Farrell’s consolation try gave the travelling fans something to cheer about but the manner of the defeat has left plenty of Wigan Warriors fans fuming.

“Pathetic” – Wigan Warriors’ fans take aim after lacklustre performance

Matt Peet himself wasn’t exactly happy with the loss as he called for a major response against Catalans Dragons after lamenting the “below-par” performance in which he claimed his side were “beaten in all areas”.

Those thoughts were echoed by plenty of Wigan’s fans with social media flooded with angry comments after the loss.

Chief among those reactions was one fan who claimed that they were “embarrassed to be a Wigan supporter right now”, whilst another added that the loss was “an absolute disgrace (of a) performance”.

Those comments were echoed by another who argued that Wigan had been off the boil ever since their victory over Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge.

They claimed: “That was disgusting and in all honesty. We have been disgusting all season bar the Penrith game.”

Given that it was just the second loss of the season, some fans couldn’t quite understand the implosion from others.

“Talk about an over reaction ffs” one fan posted, understandably so.

Despite it marking just the second defeat of 2024 for Wigan, it was the manner that plenty of fans took issue with and certain players were singled out too.

The right edge of Adam Keighran and Abbas Miski was the side that Hull KR scored three of their five tries down and one fan has lamented the pair in the “pathetic” defeat.

They posted: “Pathetic. One of the worst right edges we’ve ever had this. Has cost us tries in every single game so far. Two small blokes who can’t defend yet are slower than our props.”

Another added: “Got bullied badly tonight. Discipline desperately needs sorting. Defence weak far to many bouncing off tackles. Attack anonymous barely had a platform to build from tonight. Needs to be like Catalan at magic last season we improved massively after that defeat.”

That loss at Magic Weekend last season saw Wigan put in a spirited performance against St Helens before a run of games that included just one win in 18, leading all the way up until their defeat at Good Friday earlier this season.

Ironically enough, Wigan’s next game is against Catalans so perhaps they can fix up their issues with a win against the French side who will also be reeling after a 30-2 loss against Leigh Leopards.
