Castleford Tigers confirm re-signing of Super League forward

Castleford Tigers have re-signed Sam Eseh on loan

Castleford Tigers have confirmed the signing of Sam Eseh from Wigan Warriors on a two-week loan deal for the second time this season.

The 20-year-old joined Wigan from Wakefield Trinity ahead of this season and has 15 Super League appearances to his name.

In 2022, he spent time on loan to Barrow Raiders and Featherstone Rovers, where he won the RFL Championship’s Young Player of the Season award.

He also won Wakefield’s Young Player of the Season in their last campaign.

Currently, the 6 foot 4 forward is on a two-year deal with Wigan Warriors.

He had originally joined Castleford on a short-term loan just two weeks ago, but didn’t play for the side as a precaution after his hamstring, two months on from an injury sustained in pre-season, was tight.

Last week, he played in a reserves game against Hull KR, and must feel ready to play at Super League standard now.

On the move, Wigan’s transition coach John Duffy said: “It’s great that Sam will get the opportunity play some minutes in Super League.

“His opportunity with Castleford was delayed slightly as a precaution but we’re looking forward to seeing him work with Craig and his staff at Wheldon Road.”

Castleford’s injury problems have been well-documented this season, and they’ve spent most of the campaign with their injury list in double figures.

The Tigers’ Director of Rugby, Danny Wilson, said: We needed to add some presence to our pack especially with all the injuries and suspensions.

“Sam is a great fit and comes from a good club who will certainly add quality to our team.

“When we knew he was available we acted quickly. I would like to thank Wigan for their assistance.”

Wigan head coach Matt Peet rates Eseh highly, and said yesterday: “We know what his strengths are, we see him every day in training and he’s applying himself really well.”

“I’m confident that he’s going to be a real success here long-term.

“He’s a young player and it’s about picking the right opportunity for him.”

Sam Eseh will be immediately available for the Tigers’ upcoming fixtures, and the move could be extended beyond the initial two weeks.

He has been named in the squad as Castleford Tigers face Wigan’s rivals, St Helens, at Wheldon Road on Friday 10th May at 8pm.
