Five transfer targets for Derek Beaumont and Leigh Leopards

Players linked with a move to Leigh Leopards

On Friday, the huge news broke that John Asiata would leave the Leigh Leopards to join Hull FC. The announcement enraged Leigh owner, Derek Beaumont. Beaumont claimed he was “staggered” by the contract Leigh had offered Asiata.

Hull swooping for Asiata was a major surprise and it was reported by Sky Sports’ presenter Brian Carney that other sides turned the loose forward down due to his age, something that Derek Beaumont did confirm in part when addressing fans this weekend.

Speaking on Saturday just before Leigh Leopards’ clash with Castleford Tigers, Beaumont reaffirmed his commitment to spending the full salary cap, specifically noting that it would include using all available marquee spots. This means a high-profile replacement for Asiata could be on the way to Leigh.

Here are five potential replacements for the talismanic forward.

Sam Hall – Castleford Tigers

Castleford academy product, Sam Hall, has become a key part of Craig Lingard’s Tigers side. He joined the Castleford academy at the age of 14, making his debut in the 2020 season. He signed a two-year contract extension in 2022. He has played in all 10 of the Tigers’ games this season.

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and Castleford are yet to agree extended terms. Speaking after Asiata’s move was announced, Beaumont claimed Leigh have signed a player from Castleford which is yet to be announced.

Hall scored an important try in the Tigers recent draw at the Leigh Sports Village. Could it be that Hall’s performances may have impressed to offer Hall a move across the Pennines?

Luke Yates – Huddersfield Giants

Luke Yates joined Huddersfield from Salford in 2021. He has since gone on to become an integral part of the Giants’ side. Yates has become an integral part of Ian Watson’s side and was named captain ahead of the 2022 season. He captained the side in their loss in the 2022 Challenge Cup final and signed a contract to the end of the 2024 season.

However, Yates’ contact is now running down. He has been heavily linked with a move away from the John Smiths Stadium. Warrington Wolves are reportedly in pole position to sign Yates. But, no deal has been announced. Should that move not go through, Leigh may make a move for Yates.

Tyrone Peachey – Penrith Panthers

Versatile Penrith Panthers man, Tyrone Peachey, has had a nomadic career in the NRL. Since making his debut in 2013, he has appeared for Cronulla Sharks, Penrith Panthers, Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers. He eventually returned to Penrith in 2023.

He has played in almost every position during his career. Peachey has played centre, half-back, loose forward, second-row, full-back and hooker at different points. However, loose forward is considered to be his best position. This makes Peachey a candidate to replace Asiata.

Peachey was 18th man for the Panthers’ 2023 NRL grand final win. He also appeared in the 2024 World Club Challenge defeat against Wigan Warriors. His contract at Penrith will expire at the end of the 2024 season and he is yet to sign extended terms. At 32-years-old, Peachey may decide now is the right time to lock down a position in Super League with Leigh Leopards.

Jack De Belin – St George Illawarra

Papua New Guinea international, Jack de Belin, is a one club man. He has played for St George Illawarra since making his NRL debut in 2019. During that time, he has also represented New South Wales in State of Origin and earned three PNG caps. Current Leigh Leopards head coach, Adrian Lam, is also a former PNG international coach, and has previously coached the national side.

However, his contract at the Dragons is due to expire at the end of the season. It may be the perfect time for de Belin to make the move to Super League. He would fit the bill as a replacement for Asiata. De Belin is a skilful player, who is able to cover both prop and loose forward.

Ben Garcia – Catalans Dragons

French International, has been a crucial player for the Catalans Dragons since his debut in 2013. Aside from a brief, unsuccessful stint with the Penrith Panthers in 2016 in which Garcia failed to make a first-grade appearance, he has spent his entire career in Perpignan. Garcia has made nine appearances for Les Dracs this season and has scored one try.

However, Garcia’s contract expires at the end of the 2024 season. He appears set to leave the Sade Gilbert Brutus. The Dragons are reportedly set to sign Oliver Partington from Salford for 2025. He is thought to be Garcia’s replacement.

This opens the Frenchman to a move to the UK, and Leigh Leopards are reportedly in pole position to secure his signature. Garcia could be on the verge of swapping the red and gold of the Catalans for the Leopard print of Leigh.
