South Sydney Rabbitohs’ have made a disastrous start to the NRL season. This led to them cut ties with head coach, Jason Demetriou. The Bunnies sit bottom of the NRL ladder after seven games, with just one win.
Their slow start has prompted the club to swing into action in the transfer market. They are heavily linked with bringing Wayne Bennett back to the club as head coach. They are also on the verge of capturing star St Helens man, Lewis Dodd, on a long-term contract.
South Sydney recruitment chief, Mark Ellison, is currently in the UK. According to reports, he wants to secure a prop and a winger from Super League. Now, the four props on Souths’ list have been revealed.
South Sydney Rabbitohs target Super League forwards
According to reports in the Courier Mail, Souths have identified four Super League forwards who they believe fit the bill. The first is Dodd’s St Helens team-mate, George Delaney.
However, Delaney is under contract until the end of 2026. This means the Rabbitohs would have to pay a transfer fee to secure his signature.
The 20-year-old made his Super League debut last season. He has made eight appearances in the current season. His importance to the side means Saints will be reluctant to let him leave at this stage.
The report also suggests three other names who the Souths are in signing. Arguably the biggest name is Tom Amone, of the Leigh Leopards. Amone began his career with the Leopards in 2019. He played nine games before moving to the Tigers, then Leigh.
Amone’s contract at Leigh is up at the end of the season. Owner, Derek Beaumont, has spoken of the club’s current challenges with the salary cap. It is possible they may not be able to match an offer from the Souths.
Also on the list is young Wigan forward Tyler Dupree. England international, Dupree, only joined the Super League champions last year. He joined mid-season from Salford Red Devils. Dupree’s form has impressed the Souths. Although his four-year contract may prove a stumbling block.
The final name on the Souths list is another highly-rated English forward. Tom Holroyd, of the Leeds Rhinos, made his Super League debut in 2018. His contract expires at the end of 2025 and has the power the Rabbitohs currently lack.
All of these Super League clubs will be desperate to hold onto their prized assets. However, the lure of the NRL may be too strong.
