Wigan Warriors open to move for close season signing

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet open to player transfer

Wigan Warriors have had an exceptional 12 months on the field. The Warriors won the Super League Grand Final in the end of season showpiece at Old Trafford. They backed up this success by lifting the World Club Challenge at the DW Stadium in February.

This on the season success was mirrored off the field. Wigan completed some of the best business in Super League, by making some shrewd signings. Adam Keighran, Kruise Leeming, Sam Walters and Tiaki Chan all joined the club to bolster to a strong squad.

Now, Matt Peet, has stated that one of these players may need to leave the club to gain some much-needed game time.

Wigan Warriors open to Chan departure

Chan joined Wigan from the Catalans Dragons in the off-season, along with Keighran. Chan had a breakout season for the Dragons in 2023, impressing as he made 14 first-team appearances for the Perpignan outfit. This caught Wigan’s eye, and they wasted no time in snapping up the young forward.

Opportunities at Wigan have been more limited this season. Chan has played in three of Wigan’s nine Super League games so far. Peet, speaking to Wigan Today, now admitted that Chan may need a loan move to get some match fitness.

“He’s going to play for the reserves at the weekend and it might be moving forward, he plays a couple of weeks out on loan to get the game time he needs and to work his way back into our squad.”

Strong competition for places

Wigan have received a welcome boost in recent week. Key players such as Walters and Ethan Havard have returned from injury. This means there is strong competition for places in the Wigan squad.

According to Peet, those on the fringes of the squad need to be ready to take their opportunity when it arrives.

“It’s all about being the best prepared you can be and looking to improve every week as a player.

“If you’re going to improve by playing reserve grade or out on loan, to show that you’re ready for that first-team opportunity when it comes, then so be it.”
