Paul Wellens has his say on whether we should have draws in Super League

St Helens head coach Paul Wellens

Speaking after their win over Leeds Rhinos which was nearly the first draw in Super League for over a year as the game ticked into the final minute of golden point before Lewis Dodd nailed a decisive drop goal, Paul Wellens was asked about the nature of draws in Super League.

Many felt the game last night was deserving of a draw and that was something Wellens hinted at as he said Leeds were probably unfortunate not to get anything from the game:

“Yeah, it was, and you know what, if I’m totally honest, I think probably Leeds were unfortunate to not get something from that game.

“Their players were dropping like flies at one point, and their interchanges were all messed up. But what they showed was a real competitiveness, and maybe we were a bit lucky.

“I’m sure that despite the loss, I’m sure that Rohan is probably very proud of his players and the way they’re performing. They’re certainly a very challenging and competitive team to beat.”

Meanwhile, he likened the competitiveness between the two teams to two brothers:

“I think when you have two teams very similar in terms of competitiveness, in terms of will to win, both want the same thing.

“I suppose it’s like two brothers fighting in the backyard, they want to get one over the other. I think that’s what you see in games like this tonight.

“I love these types of occasions, I love coming to Headingley, I love coming to some great places to come and play, but it’s always a huge challenge.

“In that sense, that’s why I’m so pleased we’ve come away with a win. we’ve come away with a win.”
