Leigh Leopards: Derek Beaumont reveals transfer offer for John Asiata’s replacement

Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont

The news that John Asiata would leave Leigh Leopards shook Super League when it was announced. In the aftermath of the transfer, Leigh owner, Derek Beaumont, expressed his frustration. He was unhappy with the way in which the news broke, and the wording of Hull FC’s statement.

Beaumont criticised Hull for their handling of the affair and stated that he was “staggered” with the contract they had offered Asiata. Asiata has been a key part of Leigh’s side in Super League; however, he has suffered with injuries this year, limiting his impact.

Now, Beaumont has discussed Leigh’s plans to replace Asiata. The Leopards are currently struggling in Super League, having won just two of their opening nine games. Most recently, they played out a thrilling draw with fellow strugglers, Castleford Tigers.

Asiata’s departure leaves a huge hole in the Leigh squad, which Beaumont is working on filling.

Speaking in a Fan Q&A on Leopards TV, Beaumont has revealed Leigh are actively working on securing Asiata’s replacement. He stated that an offer has already been made. The size of Asiata’s contract has given Leigh options in the market.

“Obviously, the plan is to replace him. I mean, that’s an obvious one,” said Beaumont. “I’ve literally just come from a meeting with Jukesy (Neil Jukes) and Chessy (Chris Chester), so we’re aware of the marketplace.

“We didn’t have our radar out for that position because we wanted to keep John, which we’ve openly said is a fantastic footballer.

“He’s with a quota spot and he’s with a big budget so it gives us opportunity to look at something different.

“We’ve just been viewing some VT there and we’ve already got an offer out for someone that we’re really impressed with, so just watch this space.”

Asiata’s replacement has ‘big boots to fill’

In the interview, Beaumont also spoke highly on the importance that Asiata has. As well as his role on the field, he plays in important role off the field. Beaumont believes Leigh will be losing a leader when he departs for East Yorkshire.

“John will get replaced with his big boots to fill, not just what he does on the field,” added Beaumont.

“He’s a great human being, he’s been a great captain and leader at the club and he’ll continue to do so.”

Asiata has recently published a statement, which explains his disappointment in the way that his move to Hull FC was announced.

Leigh host sixth-placed Salford Red Devils on Friday night. Salford are currently nine points clear of the Leopards. Leigh will go into the game without Asiata, who is on the long-term casualty list after an injury in training.
