Jonny Lomax speaks on Paul Wellens “not knowing the rules” after golden point win

After their win over Leeds Rhinos, St Helens star Jonny Lomax wasn’t too impressed by the performance.

He said the Saints made it hard work for themselves and that they weren’t disciplined.

“Hard work brought on a lot by ourselves,” he said on Sly Sports.

“I thought Leeds were fantastic. With the players they had injured, we had to be disciplined and build some fatigue into the game and we had a total lack of it.

“Coming up with unforced errors. Everyone wants to show their skill but I think we need to be a little more disciplined.

“In terms of the drop goals, if you don’t get it clean lets just put it in a corner and start again.

“We gave away far too many seven tackle sets.”

Happy with the win, he also wants his team to learn from it:

“I don’t want to be too negative. It’s fantastic to get the two points and the way Leeds are going it’s more like four points.

“We need to learn off the back if it. We certainly need to improve.”

Earlier in the programme a clip of Paul Wellens shouting for the Saints to watch the short kick off after Lewis Dodd’s drop goal was pointed out and thus Brian Carney joked and asked Lomax about Wellens not knowing the rules:

“I think that’s what it was like. The game was so frantic and you get caught up in the emotion of the game and that ties into our need to be more disciplined and be more calm.”
