Jack Welsby was sensational today as St Helens were crowned World Champions as they defeated NRL Champions Penrith Panthers 13-12 in their own back yard.
He got a try and an assist as well as coming up with two massive try saving tackles that proved the difference.
After the game, Welsby was quick to cement the claim that St Helens are the best in the world.
He told Fox Sports: “It is everything we deserve. We are the best group in the world and we have proved it tonight. I am just still buzzing to be with these lads.”
He also reflected on an error from himself that nearly cost them the game:
“The emotions at the end, when I knocked on, I thought I’d done us in again like I did for England.
“They are special halfbacks to come up with a play like that to win the game.”
Man of the Match, he claimed his teammates deserved it more than him:
“I don’t think I deserve it. Some of the stuff our middles have done in there against the best pack in the world is unbelievable. Morgan Knowles had done 80 minutes, James Roby is brilliant and so was Curtis Sironen on the edge.”
He also responded to those who wrote the Saints off:
“We have won the last four Grand Finals, we knew we could come over here and win. It was the toughest game I’ve ever played in.
“I knew we could do it and we have.”
