Warrington Wolves pay tribute to Club President and ex-Chairman

Former Warrington Wolves Chairman Doug Hoyle

Warrington Wolves have paid tribute to Club President Lord Doug Hoyle after his sad passing was confirmed by his son, RFL President Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

Lord Hoyle was chairman of Warrington Wolves from 1999 to 2009 overseeing their Challenge Cup win over Huddersfield in 2009, stepping down from his role at the conclusion of that season.

That victory broke Warrington’s 35-year streak without a trophy and the club would then go on to lift the Cup again in 2010 and 2012, most recently lifting that silverware in 2019.

It was under Lord Hoyle’s leadership though that Warrington began to truly establish itself as one of the ‘big four’ and the club has now paid their respects to him with a post via social media.

Warrington Wolves’ post read: “It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of Club President Lord Doug Hoyle. Doug was Chairman of the club between 1999-2009 and was a much loved figure in the town. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.”

Former Warrington Wolves Chairman’s passing confirmed

Lord Hoyle’s son, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, had first confirmed the news of his passing via social media with the Rugby Football League President taking to X to reveal that he and his family are “devastated”.

Sharing an image featuring himself and his father, he posted: “It is with great sorrow that I have to announce that my beloved father, Lord Doug Hoyle, passed away peacefully at home late last night with his family by his side. The whole family are devastated.”

The RFL themselves have also offered condolences to Sir Lindsay, adding: “The RFL sends condolences to our President,@CommonsSpeaker, for the loss of his father, Lord Doug Hoyle. Like his son, Lord Hoyle was a great and valued supporter of the sport, and especially of the Warrington club. RIP.”

Both Lord Hoyle and his son Sir Lindsay are avid Warrington Wolves fans and have been vocal in parliament about their much-beloved club and sport.

Only last year Sir Lindsay told BBC 5 Live of his ambitions on how to expand the game whilst his late father clearly showed ambition during his time involved with Warrington Wolves.

Everyone at Serious About Rugby League sends our thoughts and condolences to Lord Hoyle’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.
