Sonny Bill Williams to come out of retirement and join Super League club

Sonny Bill Williams is one of the biggest legends of rugby league and and rugby union and has also chanced his arm in boxing but sadly we saw very little of him in the Betfred Super League.

Williams made his name at the Canterbury Bulldogs helping the Bulldogs win the NRL title in 2004 before taking on then Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos in the 2005 World Club Challenge where he showed the physical ferocity of his ability as well as his skill in a terrific game where he came up short 39-32 but did have a fun coming together against Leeds Rhinos legend Ryan Bailey.

Sadly, the sport would lose Williams to the 15-man game until he returned in 2013 with the Sydney Roosters helping them win the 2013 NRL title and becoming the perfect foil to England superstar and South Sydney Rabbitohs legend Sam Burgess who is currently a Super League coach at Warrington Wolves.

But what of Williams and Super League? He had a very brief stint in Super League in 2020 with the Toronto Wolfpack.

He was their statement signing after promotion in 2019 but the pandemic and the collapse of the Wolfpack meant we had seen the last of him in Super League until now that is…

April Fools!

Did you fall for this? Either way don’t spoil it for others. You can see our last April Fool‘s here which has somewhat come true since.

The rugby legend moved on from that ill-fated Super League stint with Toronto to have a final hoorah in the 13-man game with Sydney Roosters which remains, despite this April Fools, to be the last time he played the game.

In the years since, Williams has returned to the Boxing Ring. In June 2021 he had his first professional fight as he took on Waikato Falefehi. He won the fight on points 57-56 in a unanimous decision.

In March 2022, he kept the fights coming defeating a former professional Australian Rules player Harry Hall with a Technical Knockout.

His most recent fight was sadly a defeat. He lost in Sydney to Mark Hunt in the fourth round of an eight round heavyweight bout on November 5th 2022.
