“Not convinced” – Barrie McDermott questions crucial Salford Red Devils decision

Salford Red Devils have returned to winning ways against the Leigh Leopards in the Betfred Super League as the Leopards were left with still only one win in the league.

Marc Sneyd pulled the strings throughout the game and was named Man of the Match by Sky Sports.

After the game, he said to Sky: “Yeah, it was fun, and then we were talking midway probably through that game, we don’t make things easy for ourselves, but once again we found a way to get through the game and get the two points which is what matters at this stage in the season and if we can keep knocking them off we’re happy enough. The terrific thing for us

“Yeah we take a lot of effort into is our defence and we’re trying our best to control the ruck a little bit better than we did last year and I think we’ve done that, we took a pretty decent step forward in that sense and it’s starting to show on the field. I think our middle are doing a great job for us in the main part so hopefully we continue doing what we’re doing and just keep getting better at it.”

Asked about the response to defeats to Wigan Warriors and Hull KR, Sneyd said about how much soul searching there had been:

“Yeah, I’ll tell you the truth, not much if I’m honest. We know what we’re about. We were what, five minutes away from the win against Wigan. Performance-wise we were on and that’s what we’re looking at, performance.

“And then obviously, Hull KR last week was really disappointing. That was one of them where you learn as quick as you can from that situation. We know that’s not us, what we dished up last week and we’re unfortunate that it ended up being a cup game but it’s one of them, it is what it is, it’s done and dusted now soon as that full-time whistle’s blown you can’t really do anything about it so yeah we learned some lessons but as far as soul-searching because we know what we’ve got and we know what we can do so we just kind of reiterate it, get back to what we do best.”

Sneyd and the Salford Red Devils were terrific throughout the game as they defeated the Leigh Leopards.

However, on Sky Sports Barrie McDermott felt Salford were lucky saying twice: “They rode their luck a bit.”

This was related to some big calls went the way of Salford. McDermott said of the clinching try from Ethan Ryan: “I’m not convinced he’s got that right. They say it’s hit his head. I think Ethan Ryan touches it into Sam Stone when he’s trying to pick it up. Therefore it’s a knock on because he’s touched into his own man.

“They’ve had the rub of the green. They deserve to win but there was also a question mark over the pass to Oliver Partington. That looked forward.”
