‘It looked like he had intent’ – Kevin Brown and Jon Wells slam Sam Powell’s tackle on St Helens winger

Wigan Warriors went down 22-4 to St Helens on Good Friday, but one incident stood out from that game.

It was Sam Powell’s crusher tackle on Jon Bennison, which has since been given a Grade E by the Disciplinary Match Review Panel, that was the talking point and Sky Sports pundits Jon Wells and Kevin Brown had their own say on the incident.

“I would say it was shocking, shocking and shocking,” Wells said on Sky Sports.

“It was a red card offence, it’s a Grade E offence says the match review panel which is the same as Brad Fash’s ‘nibble’ on Elliot Minchella, how can those two be the same?

“That tackle was disgraceful.”

Kevin Brown was also horrified by the tackle, but was happy to see Bennison walk away injury-free.

“I’m just glad Jon Bennison walked up and walked away,” Brown said.

“He got the technique wrong and it looked like he had intent when he went down and I’m sure it felt wrong to Sam Powell.

“Will Pryce picked a bloke up and it’s a lottery when you’re in the air, but when you have the head in the chest spot you know it’s a dangerous spot.

“I think he is in for some weeks ban.”
