Championship head coach resigns with immediate effect

Dale Ferguson has resigned as Dewsbury Rams head coach after a tough start to the season.

The Rams have won only one of their opening six games and sit bottom of the Championship table.

Ferguson was appointed in September last year following Dewsbury’s promotion back to the Championship, with former boss Liam Finn taking up the head coach role at Halifax.

Speaking on his departure, Ferguson said: “I’d just to thank the players and the fans for their support, this hasn’t been an easy decision for me to make but at the moment I feel I can help more on the field as a player.”

Paul March named interim Dewsbury Rams head coach

Dewsbury have confirmed that the club’s current assistant coach, Paul March, will now become head coach until then of the season.

Speaking on taking the interim role, March said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank Fergie (Dale Ferguson) for bringing me into the club.

“I’m proud to take over my home town club which has a lot of history, it’s my job to build a team on the field that gives 100% every week and play the game in a way that entertains the supporters, it’s a big challenge but one I’m ready for, starting on this Saturday against Toulouse.”

Despite been born in Dewsbury, March never actually played for the Rams. In his 328 career games, he represented Wakefield Trinity, Huddersfield Giants, York Knights, Hunslet Hawks and Keighley Cougars.

Dewsbury also confirmed that March’s fellow assistant coach, Conor Turner, will remain in the same role to assistant March.

The club also confirmed there will be a further update on Ferguson, who was still technically a player at the Rams, in the near future.

“We will have a further update on Dale’s future as a player at the club shortly. We would like to thank Dale for his efforts during his time as Head Coach of Dewsbury Rams,” the official statement concluded.

Dewsbury’s next game is at home to Toulouse Olympique on Saturday, with the match, which will be March’s first in charge, at Tetley’s Stadium, kicking off at 6pm.
