Hull FC legend calls for “Tony out” on social media after Leigh Leopards defeat

Tony Smith in a press conference.

Former Hull FC star Jamie Shaul has taken to social media to call on his former club to part company with Head Coach Tony Smith.

Shaul started his career at Hull FC really making an impact in the early 2010s and by 2016 he was one of the best fullbacks in the league and perhaps the fastest.

The fullback was the hero as the Black and Whites ended their wait for a Wembley win in 2016 defeating the Warrington Wolves and a year later he would feature again as Hull FC won back to back Challenge Cups against Wigan Warriors.

However, going into 2021, Shaul would suffer an injury and new coach Brett Hodgson would put the number one shirt on Jake Connor.

This would result in Shaul’s future being up in the air. He would battle to take the number one shirt back but it would never come under Hodgson or his replacement Tony Smith who brought in Tex Hoy and Jack Walker instead.

Shaul left the club after a stellar career there at the end of last season and has joined Hull Rugby Union instead.

However, in light of the club’s loss to Leigh Leopards 54-4 on Saturday he has called for “Tony Out” on Instagram.

The fullback commented on a former teammate now Leigh star’s Ben McNamara’s post celebrating the win over their former employers simply saying Tony Out.

It could be a busy day for Hull FC after yesterday’s disciplinary. Franklin Pele has been given a Grade C Dangerous Contact charge and a one-match penalty notice for his tackle in Hull FC’s heavy defeat to Leigh Leopards at the weekend.

He is the only player to be given a suspension this week, and will miss their Challenge Cup fixture against Huddersfield Giants.

Fa’amanu Brown was also charged with dangerous contact but only given a Grade B and thus was only fined.

However, at times fines don’t mean clubs won’t appeal a suspension as we have seen from Leigh Leopards and John Asiata. So Hull FC could choose to appeal both bans.
