Castleford Tigers land upset to win their first Super League game of 2024

Castleford Tigers have finally broken their duck in Super League with Craig Lingard landing his first win as a head coach in the competition as the Tigers beat Salford Red Devils 36-24.

It was a rematch of the Round Two clash which saw Salford edge out Cas in a rollercoaster game that finished 26-22 with Marc Sneyd’s kicking proving crucial to land the win live on Sky Sports.

That was Castleford’s strongest performance of the season until their first-half showing against Leeds Rhinos in Rivals Round but the Tigers struggled to turn pressure into points and eventually lost 26-6, but today was different.

In a game that was played with spirit as the club and fans paid tribute to prop George Lawler who fell ill earlier in the week with a seizure that was later revealed to have been a result of a bleed on the brain, Castleford Tigers showed real grit and determination to win.

Castleford Tigers win tough

It was Marc Sneyd’s boot that opened the scoring as he has done so many times this season and he was called into action on the ten-minute mark as Ryan Brierley scored.

Cas did respond through Innes Senior who would go on to score four but it was his first that was perhaps the best with the winger running the length of the filed and just evading Ryan Brierley’s covering tackle to score.

Amir Bourouh saw yellow for a tip tackle with Cas adding two whilst with a man advantage, Sam Hall scoring before Senior added his second.

Salford responded before the breakthrough Tim Lafai and the boot of Marc Sneyd to make it 18-14.

The Red Devils scored the first of the second half with Nene Macdonald running 60 metres to score before Joe Shorrocks broke free and offloaded to Brierley for Salford to make it 25-18.

From that point on it looked over for Castleford Tigers but they showed a level of grit that they hadn’t in previous games with two scores from Senior and one from Brad Martin seeing the Tigers get over the line for their first win of the season.
