Rumour Mill #9

Columnist JACK CONLON brings you the biggest rumours and gossip from the world of rugby league over the past week.

Sandow heading to Cumbria

Controversial former Warrington halfback Chris Sandow is set to announce his return to the UK tomorrow (Tuesday), with Workington Town seeming the likely destination. Sandow hasn’t played in the top flight since leaving the Wolves in 2016, most recently turning out for Moranbah Miners.

The 30-year-old has been teasing fans as to his next destination on Instagram, revealing it is an English club beginning with the letter ‘W’ and having an ‘I’ in it. A move to the Cumbrian side would also see Sandow link up with former teammate Fuifui Moimoi, whom he played with during his time at Parramatta Eels.

Super League pair on Jamaica radar

With preparations underway for their World Cup debut in 2021, Jamaica have targeted two Super League players to be part of their squad. As reported by Love Rugby League last week, Catalans winger Lewis Tierney is weighing up his options having previously represented Scotland but being eligible for the Reggae Warriors through his paternal grandfather.

Another player being targeted is Huddersfield centre Jordan Turner. He qualifies through his Jamaican grandparents and would most likely line up in the halves given Jamaica’s depth in the outside backs. Tierney and Turner would be the third and fourth Super League players to commit to the squad, following on from Ben Jones-Bishop and Ashton Golding. Salford’s Greg Johnson and Huddersfield’s Izaac Farrell are also reportedly set to be in the mix.

Roberts weighing up options

Following his release from Castleford, Ben Roberts is in the process of deciding where his next move will be. The halfback is understood to have a number of options in both the UK and Australia but is unlikely to secure a top-flight contract should he return overseas.

Now 33-years-old, Roberts is in the twilight of his career but would be a handy pickup for a number of Super League and Championship clubs. London Broncos and Salford Red Devils are both reportedly interested, as are Toronto and Featherstone.

Fages set for Oz

Numerous reports over the past week suggest St Helens stand-off Théo Fages is attracting serious interest from the NRL. The 24-year-old has been in stellar form this season, even keeping Saints’ 2018 top point scorer Danny Richardson out of the team.

Fages is off-contract at the end of the year and while St Helens are keen on extending his contract, they would struggle to compete with any offer from the NRL. At least two sides are believed to been keeping tabs on the Frenchman, with Gold Coast Titans and Parramatta Eels being those rumoured.

Devils set to wrap up Inu deal

Salford Red Devils are expected to confirm the signing of Krisnan Inu this week, according to League Express. The 32-year-old has been training with Ian Watson’s side after he was made redundant by Widnes last month in the wake of their financial problems.

Watson has long been an admirer of Inu and tried to sign him ahead of this season, only to be financially outbid by the Vikings. But now the former Kiwi international will head to the AJ Bell stadium and give the Red Devils’ squad depth a significant boost.
