Super League Attendances: Just one game hits 10,000 mark

Crowd for Leigh Leopards v Catalans Dragons

Super League Round Nine is in the books and it was a memorable one that has seen the top of Super League become incredibly compact.

St Helens headed to the top of the competition on Thursday when a last-minute drop goal from Jonny Lomax secured the Red Vee a 13-12 victory over Huddersfield Giants.

After taking the lead inside ten minutes the Giants led all the way until Daryl Clark’s barge-over that tied matters up and saw Jake Connor cop some stick from one former official.

The dying embers of the game saw Lomax knock the one-pointer over and sent Huddersfield home with nothing to show for their impressive performance.

St Helens’ first-placed position in Super League might not have lasted long if Catalans Dragons and Wigan Warriors were to win on Friday night, however, neither side managed that.

Champions Wigan were “beaten in all areas” by Hull KR who won 26-10 whilst Catalans were thumped 30-2 by Leigh Leopards who look to be finding their feet in their second season back in Super League.

Castleford Tigers were another side who handed out a hammering as they won 40-0 against winless London to compound the capital club’s misery.

Saturday saw another team fail to claim top spot off St Helens as Warrington Wolves lost 17-12 to Salford Red Devils, however, the loss paled in comparison to the injury loss of young star Leon Hayes who was stretchered off following an ankle injury.

Sunday wrapped up the round and it saw Hull FC hand Leeds Rhinos a scare with Rohan Smith’s side only scraping through 18-12, leading to chants of ‘We want Rohan out’ by some of the travelling supporters.

Round Eight saw a Super League attendance figure of almost 60,000 but Round Nine failed to meet that high figure.

Instead, just shy of 50,000 fans turned up with the official number unknown due to the fact that Hull KR don’t confirm their attendance, however, the game at Craven Park was a sell-out.

The remaining five games brought in a combined attendance of 40,620, with Hull KR likely surpassing 8,000 which would mean an average of 8,000 fans per game.

Hull FC’s clash with Leeds Rhinos was the only game to surpass the magical 10,000 mark with St Helens falling just shy after a crowd of 9,888 witnessed Paul Wellens’ side go top of the table.
