Warrington Wolves’ Chief Executive Karl Fitzpatrick has explained that a potential lack of leadership could explain the side’s terrible 2022 season.
That lack of leadership could be dented further with captain Jack Hughes having left to join Super League new boys Leigh Leopards – however the arrival of a number of experienced players could should change that.
The Wolves finished 11th in the table and had genuine fears of relegation, but some late-season wins quelled those worries but still didn’t hide the disappointment of a poor season for the Cheshire club.
In a fan forum that was recorded and uploaded as part of the Warrington Wolves’ Official Podcast, the club’s Chief Executive Fitzpatrick has spoken on what’s important for the upcoming season.
“One thing we want to do this upcoming season is to reconnect with the community. Not just what happened last year but we want to get the community to fall in love with the club and the players again,” Fitzpatrick said.
“The players will be going out in the community every single week, it’s not an addition to their training schedule, it is part of the training schedule. It’s really important that we’re out in the community with you guys.”
Fitzpatrick then commented on the lack of leadership in recent years before explaining how they’re trying to re-establish it.
“I think we probably had a void of player leadership in the past couple of years, we’ve had some good leaders but probably not a great number.
“I think some of the senior players that we’ve brought in and one player we’ve not touched on yet who has shown great leadership skills is Gil Dudson.
“He lives a very clean life, trains hard, has high standards and leads by example. He’s a tough, gritty player so I’m really excited, not only in terms of the ability of players we’ve brought in, but the leadership skills that they’ll bring to the playing group.”
With these comments from Fitzpatrick and the big questions surrounding captaincy, it appears that new signings Dudson and Josh McGuire are in contention to be Wire skipper for 2023.
