Jake Connor takes swipe at Leeds Rhinos fans

Jake Connor

It was an eventful game at Headingley as Huddersfield Giants picked up a famous 30-24 victory against Leeds Rhinos to record their first victory at the famous ground in six years.

The Giants produced a superb second-half display, having trailed 12-2 at half-time and then 24-12 going into the final quarter before they put together a period of pure dominance.

It was a victory that, on another night, could have been secured much earlier, with Jake Connor missing four conversion attempts as the South Stand at Headingley got on the back of the maverick full-back.

Connor had the last laugh though, kicking the penalty that put Huddersfield ahead before also having the last word during his post-match interview on Sky Sports.

Connor pitched a question after the game from Sky presenter Brian Carney who asked: “What was going through your head as you heard the crowd in the background?”

Replying on his ding-dong battle with the Headingley South Stand, Connor said: “It’s probably the loudest I heard them all game. You know I have got to get the last word in.

“But nothing really, it’s one of those things. I kicked six out of six in the warm-up but in the game it just didn’t happen for me. Thankfully I didn’t need to kick them all.”

Jake Connor to get England recall?

Connor’s performance was a throwback to the Jake Connor of a few years ago, having fallen out of form and favour with England over recent seasons.

Addressing the reasons for that and his potential for a recall to the national team, Connor admitted that last season “was a struggle” and that “he wasn’t at it”.

He added: “I had two big operations coming into last season and I was way overweight. Now I am starting to feel myself again.

“I don’t know about England because they have got some wonderful players now. I just want to get my form back. I just want to try get back to the point I was a couple of year ago.”
