Hull KR tie down star man to extended deal

Hull KR

Hull KR are having an excellent 2024 season. The Robins currently sit fifth in the Super League table and have qualified for the semi-final of the Challenge Cup. They’ve also had a busy week in the transfer market which has seen them secure the signature of Jack Broadbent from Castleford Tigers on an initial season-long loan deal.

The Robins have now received a welcome boost, as winger, Joe Burgess has signed a two-year contract extension. Burgess joined the Robins from Salford in the close season. He left Salford in unusual circumstances with the Red Devils releasing him from his contract following an investigation into his conduct.

However, Burgess has quickly adapted and made a huge impact on life in East Hull scoring seven tries in six appearances and forming a strong partnership with Peta Hiku.

Speaking in a club press release announcing the deal, Burgess stated his excitement at extending his spell with Hull KR.

“I’m buzzing to be staying for two more years. I’ve been trying my hardest since I’ve started to get that.

“I’m really happy living over here and playing for this club, it was a no-brainer once the offer was made, I wanted to get it signed, sealed and delivered.”

Burgess believes that the culture at Hull KR has been the driving force behind their recent success.

“Hull KR’s pushing for success and it’s a real drive for the club and for me. It’s definitely a club on the up and that’s on the back of the great work being done on the field by the players and coaching staff and off it too with the board and back office.

‘We have a good culture here, from the boys to our kit man, Bonesy (Alan Fellows). Everyone’s working towards the same goal and that’s the attraction of the club.”

Hull KR head coach, Wilie Peters, also stated his delight at tying Burgess down with the Australian believing that Burgess has added a key ingredient which was previously missing from the Robins squad.

Peters explained: “Joe (Burgess) is going to be a key player for us over the next couple of seasons. We were fortunate Joe became available in January and he’s worked extremely hard to earn this new extension with the club.

“An area we wanted to bring in to the club was more speed and Joe certainly brings that, our fans saw a glimpse of that against Leigh a couple of weeks back. Joe’s a really well-liked character within the group and I look forward to working with him over the next couple of seasons.”

Hull KR host Burgess’ former club Wigan Warriors at Craven Park on Friday night. Burgess will be hoping to celebrate his new contract by getting one over on his old club.
