Sam Burgess makes decision on future following South Sydney links

Sam Burgess Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves made the brave decision to appoint Sam Burgess as the successor to Daryl Powell and so far it looks to be one that is paying off with the Wire flying in Super League.

Heading into today’s game against Leigh Leopards, Wire had a record of five wins and two losses with both of those defeats coming against Catalans Dragons and by narrow margins, with today’s narrow 16-14 win improving that record further.

They have also stormed into the Challenge Cup semi-finals after putting St Helens to the sword at The Totally Wicked Stadium last week with their second-half blitz seeing them run out as 31-8 victors.

Understandably, plenty of the praise has gone towards Sam Burgess and rightly so with the rookie head coach looking to have transformed the culture at The Halliwell Jones Stadium and making fans once again ask if it really could be their year.

That praise has led to NRL attention with reports down under suggesting that his former side South Sydney Rabbitohs could be lining up a move for the Englishman with current head coach Jason Demetriou under plenty of pressure.

Sam Burgess has now spoken out about the links after being asked live on Sky Sports ahead of today’s game.

How long will Sam Burgess stay at Warrington Wolves?

Sky Sports presenter Jenna Brooks referenced the growing pressure on Jason Demetriou before asking: “If the opportunity was to come up for a potential move back to the NRL, could anything at this point in time make you move back?”

To that, Sam Burgess was staunch in his reply: “No, none whatsoever. It’s a two-year contract here and I will honour that.”

He would go on to laud Warrington’s owner Simon Moran and he’s even coming to appreciate the English weather once again after having been down under for the past decade-plus.

Burgess explained: “Simon and everyone at the club have been brilliant, so I mean, I’m very happy, especially now that the sun’s out.

“So I’m loving our time here and I won’t be going back any sooner.”

Showing his leadership qualities, he was quick to share the praise as he highlighted the incredible impact that Martin Gleeson has had on the team with Gleeson joining Sam Burgess’ back-room staff.

“Yeah he’s brilliant,” beamed Burgess.

“I really enjoy working with him, the players love his company, he’s a great character.

“You know, our attack has been a great part of our game and a lot is thanks to Glees. He’s very intelligent and thinks more than he should do really, but he’s brilliant to have alongside.”
