Wakefield Trinity’s star signing misses out on high profile shirt number

Yesterday Wakefield Trinity confirmed the signing of former Catalans Dragons centre Samisoni Langi.

Trinity had missed out on the centre last year after he backflipped out of a move to Belle Vue to stay with the Dragons but now joins them for 2023 on a two-year deal.

With Trinity confirming their squad numbers day by day and Corey Hall awarded the number three shirt for 2022 yesterday, it seemed that the announcement of Langi’s signing was done in time to confirm that the former left centre at Catalans would be taking on the four jersey at Belle Vue.

However, that is not the case with Trinity keeping the number four jersey with veteran centre Reece Lyne.

The former Hull FC centre is in his 11th season with the club and about to celebrate a testimonial.

Fans will have to wait and see what shirt number Langi takes on for 2023 but based on the comments from CEO Michael Carter yesterday it could be one of a number of number given the fact he believes Langi can cover the centres, the backrow and the halves next year.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the squad numbers develop as Wakefield confirm them over the coming days.
