Tom Burgess reflects on win over “really strong side” & says England is star is “one of the best in the game”

Tom Burgess is one of England’s most experienced players. He knows a good international team when he sees one and he was full of positivity last night as England beat Fiji.

Speaking after the game on the OurLeague app, now rebranded for the World Cup, Burgess believed it was a good hit out against a strong team: “It was a good hit out. Fiji are a really strong side, they probably just struggled tonight, a few men down with a few injuries but you can’t take away from what the boys did tonight, they played a really good game and set ourselves up going into next week.”

He was especially happy that they kept Fiji scoreless for the 80 minutes: “Waney will be really happy about that, they through quite a bit at us as well so we had to defend them and get in front of them.

“It was really good that we kept them to nil.”

Burgess and his fellow forwards played well laying down the platform, but it was young winger Dom Young who laid down the platform.

Burgess believes he’s one of the best around: “I’ve seen plenty of Dom Young this year. He’s had a really good season in the NRL. The size of him and the speed, he’s one of the best in the game I’d say now even as a young lad.

“He’s a really good prospect, it’s nice to see him in an England shirt.”

But now the focus cannot be on self-congratulating but rather on Samoa next week: “That’s the focus now, the World Cup opener against Samoa, it should be a great game against a team with a really strong squad and it makes for an exciting game.”
