Samoa boss Matt Parish steps down in midst of coaching carousel

The head coaching carousel has been in overdrive lately with Sam Burgess having replaced Daryl Powell at Warrington Wolves, Danny Ward taking over from Andy Last at Castleford Tigers and also the appointment of ex St Helens star and former Leeds Rhinos assistant coach Sean Long as Wakefield Trinity’s assistant coach.

That’s not to mention the moves down under which saw ex Saints boss and Warrington’s number one target Justin Holbrook sign on with Sydney Roosters for 2024.

A new name has been added to the pile of coaches without a job and that is Matt Parish, who having led Samoa to the World Cup Final last year, has stepped down from his role in charge of the island nation.

Samoa took the world by storm as they became the first Pacific Island nation to make the World Cup Final by defeating hosts England in a thrilling semi-final on golden point.

Ultimately they fell short in the final but it was still one of the stories of the tournament and a sliding doors moment in international rugby league, highlighting that there was another team at the top table rather than just the traditional big three.

On his decision to step down, Parish told NRL.com: “It has been an incredible journey filled with triumphs, unforgettable memories and lifelong friendships but I believe it’s the right time to stand aside and give someone else the opportunity to take the lead.

“I am extremely grateful and honoured to have been part of this wonderful team and proud of the progress we have made and the positive impact that our players had on all Samoans around the world.

“I also want to express my deepest gratitude to all the dedicated and loyal players and staff that I have been fortunate enough to work with and thank them for their unwavering support and commitment.

“I am confident that the team will continue to thrive under new leadership and achieve even greater success in the future.

“I am forever humbled and thankful to all the faithful Samoans throughout the world who inspired our great team to success and thank you all for allowing me to be a part of this amazing journey.”

Parish has formerly coached in Super League, albeit for a brief period, as he led Salford back in 2011, and with Super League and NRL jobs still remaining open for 2024 there could be a race to acquire his talents.
