Super League halfback signs new deal

Leigh Centurions halfback Joe Mellor has signed a contract extension until the end of the 2022 season.

The 30-year-old halfback, who joined the Centurions from Toronto Wolfpack, has played over 200 career games, graduating at Wigan Warriors and enjoying eight seasons at Widnes Vikings.

Mellor, who earned Heritage Number #1507 when he made his Centurions debut in the opening game of the season against Wigan, follows in the footsteps of his father Sean in playing for the club. He says he had no doubts about agreeing to extend his stay at Leigh Sports Village.

“It’s been a crazy year in so many ways with the pandemic and the way the season has gone,” Mellor said. “But I still feel the same way about Leigh as the day I first signed.

“It’s a great club with fantastic facilities and the potential here is immense. We have great training facilities and pitches on which to play and train and when you look around Super League we have so much more than many clubs who don’t come close to matching what we have got.

“Leigh is a real rugby town and the fans are very passionate. If we can put together a team that can compete week in, week out and string some wins together we have a potentially massive fan base. It’s all about unlocking that potential and I want to play my part in doing that.”
