Super League coach confirms there will be “tough conversations” as club considers recruitment and retention shake up

Hull FC head coach Tony Smith with Huddersfield Giants head coach Ian Watson

Ian Watson has said there will be some tough conversations about which players will be offered extended deals at Huddersfield Giants.

Huddersfield gave a new deal to veteran prop and former Warrington Wolves star Chris Hill yesterday.

But they have decisions to make elsewhere in the squad.

“They will be, there will always be some tough conversations,” Watson said.

“It is about having the right leaders, the right balance of youth and experience and getting that right as well.

“We don’t want to have to much experience.

“What we need to do is not stop the development of younger players coming through as well and we will bring them through but in some areas we will have to strengthen.

“We have spoken about it as a team and as a club about where we want to get to.

“We want to build the club the right way and build our own legacy in the right way.”

He also confirmed the Giants’ interest in Adam Milner of Castleford Tigers.

“Yeah, he’s a decent player and has played in Grand Finals,” Watson said.

“We are in a position where we lost a number nine late last year and we recruited them kind of guys for this year.

“Going forward having an English nine who can add to the quality of the squad and bring on players and develop those younger players onto a better level.

“So whenever a quality player becomes available you are interested.

“So I wouldn’t say I’m not interested, I am definitely interested and I am going to have a look at it.

“He’s English, he’s a competitor, he has enthusiasm and is very similar to Ash Golding so it is a no brainer from us and we want to continue to build the team in the right way.”
