Steve McNamara compares Catalans Dragons star to Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow

Much has been made of Catalans Dragons’ decision to let go of a number of their young French players.

The likes of Coretin Le Cam, Mathieu Cozza and other young Frenchmen have been allowed to leave this winter as the Dragons rebuild having failed to capitalise on the success of 2021.

They have even let go of star players like Dean Whare, Josh Drinkwater – who heads to Warrington Wolves – and Wakefield Trinity bound Samisoni Langi.

However one Frenchman they did not let go of was of course the electric Arthur Mourgue.

The explosive and elusive runner is predominately a fullback but has also shone in the halves and as a substitute nine.

It is his running threat, especially when he comes off the bench against a tired defence, that, alongside his statutre, has seen him compared with Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow who played the substitute nine role to perfection.

It is a comparison even his Head Coach Steve McNamara has made on Super League’s Twitter:

“I think he clearly has got a lot of improvement in him, his potential is there to be seen, he’s going to have to continue to work hard.

“The same of the things he can do, other players can’t do. I think he’s been mentioned to Rob Burrow because of the size, you know. He’s not a big guy, he’s a small guy and he creates havoc.”
