Shaun Wane names his surprising England Man of the Match

England produced a slick performance at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday evening to comfortably beat France.

Despite wet conditions in Warrington, Shaun Wane’s side executed superbly well in both attack and defence to run out 64-0 winners.

The match saw a number of players excel, with George Williams picking up the official Sky Sports Man of the Match award after a scintillating performance in his first match as captain.

Williams scored a hat-trick and assisted three other tries to be deservedly recognised as the game’s standout player by the Sky pundits.

But after the game England coach Wane wasn’t in an agreement with Williams picking up the award, stating that the Warrington playmaker ‘has won it enough times’.

He continued: “I actually thought Matty Ashton should have got it, he was outstanding. Ash (Handley) too, I thought both wingers were outstanding.

“Then down the middle, Tom Holdroyd has been outstanding in training all this week and I thought he brought that into the game today.

“But I thought Matty (Ashton) was brilliant with how hard he worked, Ash (Handley) as well on the other side too. Both wide players executed.

“I’m not one for normally giving out a Man of the Match award but yeah, I though he was superb, as were some of the other players on debut.”

Wane also revealed that he told the players to prepare as if they were playing Samoa or Tonga, with the latter to be England’s opponents in a Test Series at the end of this season.

“We didn’t mention France, I was watching that as if we were playing Samoa. I wanted us to focus on those details and I thought the lads came through it really well in difficult conditions.”
