Rugby Union World Cup winner says departing Leeds Rhinos player is ‘something special’

Over the years plenty of men have made the switch from rugby league to rugby union with former Wigan Warriors man Jason Robinson being a prime example as he went on to lift the 2003 World Cup, and now one of his teammates from that day has lauded huge praise on one of Leeds Rhinos current stars after last night’s performance.

Robinson was a one club man in rugby league playing for Wigan Warriors from 1991 to 2000 before making the successful switch and then lifting the biggest honour in the sport of rugby union at the 2003 World Cup.

His son Lewis Tierney also started his career at Wigan Warriors before retiring in November 2021.

One man who is now bound for Wigan Warriors and will hope to emulate the success that Robinson had there is Leeds Rhinos young prop Sam Walters, with the forward having agreed a deal to join the club in 2024.

That’s a move that has seemed to bemuse Leeds Rhinos fans given Walters incredible form this season, particularly in recent games including last night’s defeat to St Helens.

Whilst St Helens won the match 22-18 it could have been a different game if Walters second try wasn’t disallowed for a forward pass.

The giant prop had earlier put the Rhinos in front after dancing through from 25 metres out and touching down, drawing compliments from social media and commentary alike given his impressive step to beat full-back Jack Welsby and power over.

One admirer on social media was Robinson’s former England teammate and one of England’s all time great rugby union player’s Will Greenwood.

The former centre is a big advocate of rugby league having been born in Lancashire although he opted for the 15-man code, where ultimately he found immense success.

Upon watching the Rhinos face Saints last night he made a comment on social media stating how impressive Walters was.

Greenwood tweeted in full: “I have been watching this lad this season for the Leeds Rhinos – Sam Walters.. something special about this lad.. glides.. finds space… offloads.. makes his tackles.. @RLBarrieMc10 Baz – this lad can play…”

He echoed the thoughts of many Rhinos fans and even tagged legendary Rhino and current commentator Barrie McDermott in the tweet, with McDermott being a big fan of Walters.

After that performance last night it’s easy to understand why and Wigan Warriors fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of both Tyler Dupree and Sam Walters as their starting props for years to come.
