Rating every Super League club’s squad depth in 2023

Squad depth is often the key to success in Super League as it allows teams to cope with injuries and always generate momentum.

But who has the strongest squad in Super League?

Castleford Tigers
1 Niall Evalds, 2 Greg Eden, 3 Jordan Turner, 4 Mahe Fonua, 5 Bureta Faraimo, 6 Gareth Widdop, 7 Jacob Miller, 8 George Lawler, 9 Paul McShane, 10 George Griffin, 11 Kenny Edwards, 12 Alex Mellor, 13 Joe Westerman, 14 Nathan Massey, 15 Alex Sutcliffe, 16 Adam Milner, 17 Jack Broadbent, 18 Callum McLelland, 19 Albert Vete, 20 Muizz Mustapha, 21 Jake Mamo, 22 Daniel Smith, 23 Suaia Matagi, 24 Cain Robb, 25 Brad Martin, 26 Elliot Wallis, 27 Bailey Dawson, 28 Sam Hall, 29 Kieran Hudson, 30 Jacob Hookem, 31 Jason Qareqare, 32 Liam Watts, 33 Aaron Willis, 34 George Hill, 35 Ilikaya Mafi, 36 Hugo Nikhata, 37 Danny Richardson.

Rating: 9/10
As you can see by the literal size of the Tigers’ squad in 2023, they have plenty of depth in almost every position. They will need it in the halves after injuries last season and with Richardson missing most of the season through injury.

Catalans Dragons
1 Arthur Mourgue, 2 Tom Davies, 3 Adam Keighran, 4 Matthieu Laguerre, 5 Fouad Yaha, 6 Tyrone May, 7 Mitchell Pearce, 8 Mike McMeeken, 9 Michael McIlorum, 10 Julian Bousquet, 11 Matt Whitley, 12 Paul Seguier, 13 Benjamin Garcia, 14 Alrix Da Costa, 15 Mickael Goudemand, 16 Romain Navarrete, 17 Cesar Rouge, 18 Tiaki Chan, 19 Arthur Romano, 22 Siua Taukeiaho, 23 Jordan Dezaria, 24 Tom Johnstone, 25 Bastian Scimone, 26 Many Ma’u. 27 Leo Laurent, 28 Ugo Tison, 29 Sam Tomkins, 30 Loan Castano, 31 Tanguy Zenon, 32 Mike Parenti.

Rating: 6/10
With the Dragons looking to bring in a centre and a prop for the new season, the Dragons don’t have the depth they’d want for the new season. That could change if they make the signings they want.

Huddersfield Giants
1 Jake Connor, 2 Jermaine McGillvary, 3 Esan Marsters, 4 Kevin Naiqama, 5 Jake Bibby, 6 Tuimoala Lolohea, 7 Theo Fages, 8 Chris Hill, 9 Nathan Peats, 10 Joe Greenwood, 11 Josh Jones, 12 Chris McQueen, 13 Luke Yates, 14 Ashton Golding, 15 Matty English, 16 Harry Ruston, 17 Owen Trout, 18 Sebastine Ikahihifo, 19 Adam O’Brien, 20 Oliver Wilson, 21 Leroy Cudjoe, 22 Harvey Livett, 23 Olly Russell, 24 Sam Halsall, 25 Innes Senior, 26 Nathan Mason, 27 Jack Ashworth, 28 George Roby, 29 Sam Hewitt, 30 Fenton Rogers, 31 Jack Bibby, 32 Will Pryce, 33 Kieran Rush, 34 Aidan McGowan

Rating: 10/10
The Giants have added more signings to their brilliant squad for the new season which has given them depth in every key position especially key roles with Jake Connor providing cover in the halves and fullback.

Hull FC
1 Tex Hoy, 2 Adam Swift, 3 Carlos Tuimavave, 4 Liam Sutcliffe, 5 Darnell McIntosh, 6 Jake Trueman, 7 Jake Clifford, 8 Ligi Sao, 9 Danny Houghton, 10 Chris Satae, 11 Andre Savelio, 12 Jordan Lane, 13 Brad Fash, 14 Joe Lovodua, 15 Joe Cator, 16 Kane Evans, 17 Cameron Scott, 19 Ben McNamara, 20 Jack Brown, 21 Connor Wynne, 22 Mitieli Vulikijapani, 23 Josh Griffin, 24 Matty Laidlaw, 25 Davy Litten, 26 Harvey Barron, 27 Will Gardiner, 28 Denive Balmforth, 29 Jamie Shaul, 30 Scott Taylor, 31 Nick Staveley, 32 Charlie Severs, 33 Brad Dwyer, 34 Kye Armstrong, 35 Lewis Martin, 36 Manoa Wacokecoke

Rating: 8/10
A decent sized squad with good depth at nine and in other roles. If they are again rocked by injuries again like the last two seasons, they will have to turn their young players.

Hull KR
1 Lachlan Coote, 2 Ethan Ryan, 3 Tom Opacic, 4 Shaun Kenny-Dowall, 5 Ryan Hall, 7 Jordan Abdull, 8 Sauaso Sue, 9 Matt Parcell, 10 George King, 11 Frankie Halton, 12 Kane Linnett, 13 Elliot Minchella, 14 Jez Litten, 15 Rhys Kennedy, 16 James Batchelor, 17 Matty Storton, 18 Jimmy Keinhorst, 19 Will Dagger, 20 Mikey Lewis, 21 Rowan Milnes, 22 Dean Hadley, 23 Louis Senior, 24 Sam Wood, 25 Luis Johnson, 26 Sam Luckley, 27 Yusuf Aydin, 28 Will Tate, 29 Phoenix Laulu Togaga’e, 30 Greg Richards, 31 Zach Fishwick, 32 Connor Barley

Rating: 8/10
A similar squad to their Hull rivals, their is solid depth but again mass injuries will again lead to them turning to youth.

Leigh Leopards
1 Zak Hardaker, 2 Tom Briscoe, 3 Ed Chamberlain, 4 Ricky Leutele, 5 Josh Charnley, 6 Joe Mello, 7 Lachlan Lam, 8 Tom Amone, 9 Edwin Ipape, 10 Rob Mulhern, 11 Joe Wardle, 12 Jack Hughes, 13 John Asiata, 14 Ben Nakubuwai, 15 Ben Reynolds, 16 Oliver Holmes, 17 Gareth O’Brien, 18 Matty Davis, 19 Aaron Smith, 20 Keanan Brand, 21 Jacob Jones, 22 Tom Nisbet, 23 Jacob Gannon, 24 Kai O’Donnell, 25 Nathan Wilde, 26 Umyla Hanley, 27 Ava Seumanufagai

Rating: 7/10
Strong initial depth but with only 27 players named they have one of the smaller squads in Super League.

Leeds Rhinos
1 Richie Myler, 2 David Fusitu’a, 3 Harry Newman, 4 Nene Macdonald, 5 Ash Handley, 6 Blake Austin, 7 Aidan Sezer, 8 Mikolaj Oledzki, 9 Kruise Leeming, 10 Zane Tetevano, 11 James Bentley, 12 Rhyse Martin, 13 Cameron Smith, 14 Jarrod O’Connor, 15 Sam Lisone, 16 Derrell Olpherts, 17 Justin Sangare, 18 Tom Holroyd, 19 James McDonnell, 20 Morgan Gannon, 21 Luke Hooley, 22 Sam Walters, 23 Liam Tindall, 24 Luis Roberts, 25 James Donaldson, 26 Corey Johnson, 27 Toby Warren, 28 Max Simpson, 29 Jack Sinfield, 30 Levi Edwards, 31 Leon Ruan, 32 Oli Field, 33 Joe Gibbons, 34 Alfie Edgell, 35 Riley Lumb, 38 Jack Smith

Rating: 8/10
A lot of depth in the backs after new arrivals, a lot of depth in the pack but a worrying amount of cover in the spine after losing two fullbacks in the shape of Zak Hardaker and Jack Walker. This means that when Richie Myler has to move into the halves to cover Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer, they will have much fewer options at fullback especially with Luke Hooley missing the start of the season through injuries.

St Helens
1 Jack Welsby, 2 Tommy Makinson, 3 Will Hopoate, 4 Mark Percival, 5 Jon Bennison, 6 Jonny Lomax, 7 Lewis Dodd, 8 Alex Walmsley, 9 James Roby, 10 Matty Lees, 11 Sione Mata’utia, 12 Joe Batchelor, 13 Morgan Knowles, 14 Joey Lussick, 15 Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, 16 Curtis Sironen, 17 Agnatius Paasi, 18 Jake Wingfield, 19 James Bell, 20 Dan Norman, 21 Ben Davies, 22 Sam Royale, 23 Konrad Hurrell, 24 Lewis Baxter, 26 Dan Hill, 27 Jumah Sambou, 28 Matty Foster, 29 Taylor Pemberton, 30 George Delaney, 31 Daniel Moss, 32 Ben Lane, 33 McKenzie Buckley

Rating: 9/10
As you’d expect from the Champions, they have strength in depth across the board largely down to the young players they have developed over the years. The concern will be if they have injuries in the halves again like they did last season.

Salford Red Devils
1 Ryan Brierley, 2 Ken Sio, 3 Kallum Watkins, 4 Tim Lafai, 5 Joe Burgess, 6 Brodie Croft, 7 Marc Sneyd, 8 Jack Ormondroyd. 9 Andy Ackers, 10 King Vuniyayawa, 11 Andrew Dixon, 12 Sam Stone, 13 Oliver Partington, 14 Chris Atkin, 15 Danny Addy, 16 Tyler Dupree, 17 Shane Wright, 18 Alex Gerrard, 19 Adam Sidlow, 20 Ellis Longstaff, 21 Amir Bourouh, 22 Rhys Williams, 23 Dan Sarginson, 24 Matt Costello, 25 Ben Hellewell, 26 James Greenwood, 27 Ryan Lannon, 28 Deon Cross

Rating: 7/10
A strong squad but again one of the smaller ones in the league. Thus if there are masses of injuries, the Red Devils could have struggles.

Wakefield Trinity
1 Max Jowitt, 2 Jorge Taufua, 3 Corey Hall, 4 Reece Lyne, 5 Tom Lineham, 6 Lee Gaskell, 7 Mason Lino, 8 Eddie Battye, 9 Liam Hood, 10 Jai Whitbread, 11 Matty Ashurst, 12 Kelepi Tanginoa, 13 Jay Pitts, 14 Jordy Crowther, 15 Liam Kay, 16 Josh Bowden, 17 Renouf Atoni, 18 Lee Kershaw, 19 Kevin Proctor, 20 Morgan Smith, 21 Samisoni Langi, 22 Rob Butler, 23 Lewis Murphy, 24 Harry Bowes, 25 Sam Eseh Jr, 26 Dane Windrow, 27 Robbie Butterworth, 28 Ellis Roberts, 29 Joe Law, 30 Olly Pratt

Rating: 7/10
Wakefield’s new signings have given them some important depth in key positions but again their squad isn’t quite as big as some of their rivals.

Warrington Wolves
1 Matt Dufty, 2 Josh Thewlis, 3 Peter Mata’utia, 4 Stefan Ratchford, 5 Matty Ashton, 6 George Williams, 8 James Harrison, 9 Daryl Clark, 10 Paul Vaughan, 11 Ben Currie, 12 Matty Nicholson, 13 Josh McGuire, 14 Sam Kasiano, 15 Joe Philbin, 16 Danny Walker, 17 Gil Dudson, 18 Tom Mikaele, 19 Joe Bullock, 20 Connor Wrench, 21 Greg Minikin, 23 Tom Whitehad, 24 Luke Thomas, 25 Leon Hayes, 26 Adam Holroyd, 27 Aiden Doolan, 28 Jack Darbyshire, 29 Josh Lynch, 30 Jake Thewlis, 31 Jamie Reddecliff, 32 Bobby Shingler

Rating: 8/10
Plenty of depth in the pack and backs, but injuries in the spine could lead them to having to call upon youngster Leon Hayes especially with Riley Dean joining Featherstone Rovers on loan.

Wigan Warriors
1 Jai Field, 2 Bevan French, 3 Toby King, 4 Jake Wardle, 5 Liam Marshall, 6 Cade Cust, 7 Harry Smith, 8 Brad Singleton, 9 Sam Powell, 10 Liam Byrne, 11 Willie Isa, 12 Liam Farrell, 13 Morgan Smithies, 14 Mike Cooper, 15 Kaide Ellis, 16 Ethan Havard, 17 Kai Pearce-Paul, 19 Joe Shorrocks, 20 Patrick Mago, 21 Iain Thornley, 22 Brad O’Neill, 23 Abbas Miski, 24 Logan Astley, 25 Alex Sutton, 26 Harvie Hill, 27 Junior Nsemba, 28 Zach Eckersley, 29 Tom Forber, 30 Ramon Silva, 32 Ryan Hampshire

Rating: 9/10
A squad that would of naturally been stronger if they would have kept John Bateman. The Warriors have strengthened where they needed to at centre however.

Apart from the expected odds on top four the rest of these assessments (not the squads) are illogically low.
