Ranking the eight best games of the 2022 Super League season

2022 was a brilliant year for rugby league and as it comes to an end it is time to reflect on the year as it ends.

So, here are the eight best Super League games of the 2022 season.

8. Leeds Rhinos 18-14 Huddersfield Giants
Controversy is often a key ingredient to a classic game and this was the case as a Blake Austin try from a darting run Brad Dwyer gave Leeds a vitally important win in the race for a play-off spot. This came after Chris Hill was sin binned for a tackle many felt Richie Myler should have been punished for.

7. Leeds Rhinos 20-20 Huddersfield Giants
Earlier in the season, it was Huddersfield Giants pulling off the drama as they battled back from being two tries behind with less than five minutes to go to send the game to Golden Point with a Innes Senior try in the corner. Neither side could win the game in extra time setting up the only draw of 2022.

6. Leeds Rhinos 20-22 Warrington Wolves
In the opening round of the 2022 season, we were treated to a classic game in which Leeds produced perhaps the second best performance of the opening weekend and lost. Down to 12 men for 65 minutes – fact down to 11 men for a spell – Leeds looked set to win until a late Connor Wrench try defeated the Rhinos.

5. Salford Red Devils 44-12 St Helens
The Salford Red Devils stunned the league by delivering St Helens’ worst defeat since 2016 when they devastated the Champions with Tim Lafai picking apart the Champions. Their attack on this occasion was something to behold and the shock value was well and truly special.

4. St Helens 19-12 Salford Red Devils
The Saints got their revenge in a dramatic semi-final to edge closer to a fourth consecutive title. Saints stormed 12-0 ahead but Salford battled back with two great tries. Jon Bennison scored the match winner but there was controversy at the end of the game as Salford could have had a penalty try which could have changed the course of history.

3. Catalans Dragons 32-36 Leeds Rhinos
Down to 12 men, Leeds pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in Super League history thanks to a Richie Myler hat-trick and a golden point try from Aidan Sezer. Coupled with Matt Prior’s sending off, the margin of the comeback perhaps makes it Super League’s best ever.

2. Hull FC 34-28 Hull KR
A typically dramatic clash in a Hull derby at the Magic Weekend, Hull FC won 34-28 in a clash characterised by the injuries both sides suffered from as Leeds Rhinos loanee Jack Walker was Man of the Match on debut for Hull FC and Warrington Wolves loanee Ellis Longstaff scored twice too on his debut. Mikey Lewis scored a mesmeric hat trick of tries for the Robins who were left to rue a controversially disallowed try from Elliot Minchella.

1. St Helens 20-18 Wigan Warriors
The game of the season unsurprisingly involved the top two in what many thought was a dress rehearsal for the Grand Final at the time. Wigan led 12-2 at the start of the second half, tries from Joe Batchelor and Jack Welsby saw St Helens battle back into control of the game but an amazing try from Bevan French looked to have won it with 10 to go. But a Brad Singleton red card had given Saints a man advantage and tries from Regan Grace and in the final play of the game from Jonny Lomax saw Saints edge a classic.

” …as Salford could have had a penalty try which could have changed the course of history.”

And we were all shocked when it wasn’t given against Saints!
