New Wigan Warriors recruit excited by young players

The one area Wigan Warriors were really focused on in terms of recruitment heading into 2023 were the centre roles.

They subsequently signed former Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield Giants centres Toby King and Jake Wardle and the due debuted for the Warriors against Salford Red Devils on Sunday in Sam Powell’s testimonial as they won 32-4.

After the game Wardle opened up on just how enjoyable it was.

“Obviously it was a tough game,” Wardle said to Wigan TV, “but it was still really enjoyable.

“It’s been a long pre-season but once you’re into competitive games, it’s a bit better and a bit easier to start getting a feel for the game. There’s a lot of positives to take out of it.

“I’m glad we got the turnout we did for Sam with it being his testimonial, and to get the result as well made it a bit sweeter.”

He also underlined just how welcomed he has been at the club:

“Everyone’s been really welcoming. The fans, the players and staff. It’s made my job a bit easier in terms of settling in”.

Wardle’s signing was a move to bring immediate success but Wardle also thinks the club has a bright future based on the young players at the club.

He said: “The young lads came on and they played really well. Things are looking good for the club with these sorts of players coming through.

“I think the future is in safe hands.”
