As Wigan Warriors clashed with Castleford Tigers there were some huge controversial moments that prompted a response from Wigan Warriors Head Coach Matt Peet.
Matt Peet was naturally asked about the red card to Liam Watts that turned the game as the Tigers went from winning 4-2 to losing 32-4.
Matt Peet said after the game: “I just think everyone’s nervous at the moment around the contacts but again I understand why it has to happen. Players can get sent off now without getting a massive amount wrong but it’s an emerging of error.
“You feel sorry for the players at times. They’re trying the best to be physical and be accurate but when you’re doing that a lot of times, particularly I think in the wet, it’s challenging. I don’t think it’s ever going to be a match where we get any one decision and debate it because there’s going to be a lot this season. I think it’s more about understanding why the game has to take these steps. It’s similar to Luke Thompson, we all have to understand that it’s the way the game is going and be prepared for some pain along the way in terms of missing players etc but understand it’s the best thing for our athletes.”
Matt Peet addresses suspension worry
There’s concern for Wigan ahead of their game against Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge next week that they could lose Harry Smith and Kaide Ellis to suspension after incidents in the game.
Matt Peet addressed this saying: “I was asked about Harry then and to be completely honest when you caught up in the game I haven’t looked at it in great detail but what will be will be.”
Wigan do have options if they lose Ellis as Peet praised Patrick Mago: “Patrick Mago had a pretty decent pre-season, he’s probably our best. He’s got a great consistency for everyone, including Patrick, but yeah I thought he was probably our man on the night, so credit to him for his hard work.”
