Leigh Leopards star suffers grotesque injury

Leigh Leopards Lachlan Lam and Zak Hardaker Challenge Cup Final

Leigh Leopards are having a number of issues at the start of the Super League season.

They have lost their opening three games of the Super League season losing to Huddersfield Giants, St Helens and Leeds Rhinos to begin the season.

Making matters worse, the Leigh Leopards have lost some of their key players to injuries. Edwin Ipape suffered an MCL injury in Round One resulting in a loan move for Warrington Wolves hooker Brad Dwyer on a two week loan.

They then lost John Asiata and Tom Briscoe in their clash with St Helens to grade two calf tears.

Against Leeds Rhinos, they held a 16-0 lead and looked set for their first win of the season but the Leeds Rhinos battled back with tries from Rhyse Martin, Matt Frawley and a delightful brace from Ash Handley and as the Rhinos ran in what would prove to be the winning try, Leigh star Lachlan Lam was helped from the field of play.

This only exacerbated the defeat suffered by the Leopards.

Leigh Leopards star suffers grotesque injury

Speaking to Leopards TV after the game, Leigh Leopards Head Coach Adrian Lam addressed the injury to his star halfback who is of course his son.

The Leigh boss was relieved to reveal that it wasn’t a muscle injury but did reveal that the injury was quite a grotesque cut down the halfback’s leg which will rule him out for a couple of weeks.

This means he may miss the do or die clash in the defence of their Betfred Challenge Cup which sees Super League clubs enter the competition.

Lam said of his son: “He had a massive laceration down his leg. I think it’s close to 10cm long. It’s deep and will probably need about 15 stitches. It’s massive and pretty big,”

“He will be out for a couple of weeks. It’s right down to the muscle but luckily it hasn’t involved the muscle. It’s deep and long. Someone’s boot got him.

“My heart was in my mouth and I was nervous for him. I was repeating to myself ‘please don’t be a knee injury’ so in the context of the injury it is a relief.”
