“Is he that quick” – Crucial try questioned as camera angles let down video referee

Last night after falling 12-0 behind Catalans Dragons scored 24 unanswered points to hand the Champions another defeat in an up and down start to the season for Paul Wellens’ side.

With 20 minutes to go the Dragons extended their lead to a decisive 24-12 margin with a Tom Davies try from a lovely Sam Tomkins kick to the corner.

The try was referred to the video referee who awarded the try but couldn’t find any sort of proof to determine whether Davies was or wasn’t offside prompting Barrie McDermott to ask the question “is he that quick?”

“It’s a pretty established route they take but that angle isn’t going to tell us the story,” McDermott said of the camera angle.

“Tom Davies is quick but is he that quick? That camera angle isn’t going to do it either.

“The touch judge for me is in the best place out of everyone.”

Meanwhile Sky Sports commentator Stuart Pyke pointed out Jonny Lomax’s complains and the fact that the video referee had to give a potential match winning try because of the lack of evidence.

“Jonny Lomax is complaining to the official there but there is no definitive angle there so the video referee has to go with the on field referee so it is another try for Catalans. Is it a match winning try for Tom Davies?”
