Ian Watson reveals what position Jake Connor will play and why

Jake Connor is finally set to make his second Huddersfield Giants debut tomorrow night as the Giants host Champions St Helens.

A lot of people have worked hard to get Connor ready for this moment after surgery none other than Giants Head Conditioner Greg Brown.

“The big thing is that Jake actually knows Greg really well as Greg was at Huddersfield when Jake was coming through,” Ian Watson said this week.

“So he only had him for a little while but I think that was enough for him to know what he was about.

“Quite funny as well but Greg Brown was actually Jake Connor’s first sponsor when he came through at Huddersfield, his gym sponsored Jake and still to this day he’s got Jake’s first shirt in his gym.

“He’s probably a little bit like a son of his to be fair so he’s pretty straight with Jake and Jake’s definitely said there’s been a difference to some of the fitness he’s done before.

“I think it’s one of them where when you know them so well then you’re even harder on them but Jake’s definitely felt it and hopefully till stand him in good stead.”

Watson also confirmed where he sees Jake Connor fitting in: the halves.

“We know where he’ll fit with us and obviously a little bit of his knee stuff, plus the way we want to play, will mean he’s a little more suited in the halves with us at this moment of time,” Watson said.

“He’s more than smart and clever enough to play full-back but the workload we ask of our full-backs, at the moment we need to build him to that.

“The big one for Jake is that like any good player they want to get their hands on the ball, so it’s letting the system do that. He’s looking forward to it, we think it’ll take us onto another level of what we want to do.

“Some of the things that we missed in the Wigan game, Jake’s not missing them. It’s those little bits of quality that make big moments.
