“I want to bring back some new trophies to Perpignan” – Catalans star signs new deal

The Dragons are enjoying their greatest ever campaign right now. The French side are top of the league having only lost one game. Catalans are now serious title contenders and many are tipping them to become the eighth team to make it to the Old Trafford decider.

A spectacular spine has been at the heart of their success in 2021. The likes of James Maloney, Josh Drinkwater and Sam Tomkins have been outstanding for the Dragons this term and have formed the backbone of their success.

But the unsung member of their spine has been new skipper Ben Garcia. This year he took on the captain’s armband following Remi Casty’s departure and has quickly become a superb leader and one of the in form forwards in the league.

In fact, for me there have been few better loose forwards if any than Garcia this season. Furthermore, it would not be surprising to see Garcia lift the League Leaders’ Shield or the Super League trophy itself at the end of this campaign.

He has now been rewarded for his efforts with a new three year deal meaning he’ll stay at the club until 2024 at least and based on this season the next three years could be a golden period for the French side.

Garcia told the Dragons’ website that he’s very pleased to remain a Dragon: “I’m delighted to stay at the club for the next three seasons. I feel good in this club and it was an easy decision for my family and I. I enjoy playing for the Dragons. We have a great squad, who enjoy working together, and we can see it on the field with our results. The club has great ambitions for the future and I want to bring back some new trophies to Perpignan.”

Equally delighted was Head Coach Steve McNamara who had this to say: “We are delighted that Benjamin has agreed to a new three year deal. His form has been outstanding this season. He is a tremendous captain and leader who is not only driving himself to new standards but taking the other players along with him. He is a hugely positive influence within our club.”
